We have no pics of white on wings yet.

I checked grandson of Tsunami yesterday. He is 13 weeks old and not a lick of white on either wing

Glad you haven't found any white.

Will have to get photos of her tomorrow....too tired to chase another chicken today. Rounded up 6 more girls out of the layer flock and sold them off to someone looking for some older layers. Those cranky old girls are stubborn and didn't want to be caught, they sure gave me a run for my money, but it's always nice when someone wants an older bird.
I didn't even get photos of the chicks today but I did manage to get them all moved.

It is OK for them to have white when they are young. It can and does molt out before they reach maturity.
So, I would rather not confuse people by posting a pic of white feathers in chicks....

You know, I did sell a couple of my BCM cockerels to a person who doesn't live too far from me. Those boys have to be around 4 months old now... I will have to check with them and see if either cockerel has white in the wings. I'll do that next week if no one gets a white wing feather picture posted by then....

I use to keep my feed in plastic garbage cans. I kept them in a storage shed for two years.

Then I had rats chew a hole in my plywood flooring and then chew a hole in the plastic cans.

Now, the hole in the floor has been repaired and the cans are now METAL CANS.

I would think about replacing the platic cans with metal ones. They are twice the price of the plast ones, but you won't even have to worry about animals chewing through them.

OBTW, Squirrels will eat through the plastic cans too!

I use plastic because it does not sweat like metal.

I've never seen a metal can sweat. What kind of weather does it do that in?

They do it here in the PNW where it is mostly always wet. I had that happen when I first had chickens and couldn't figure out why the feed in the can felt moist...then it dawned on me, metal can sweat or maybe I am referring to it wrong and I should have said condensation.. I switched to all plastic and have not had that happen since.

Hi all!

I'm looking at my first set of homebreds and trying to figure out who to keep and who to cull!

If you had to choose, would you keep a male and/or a female from a super dark egg, but with rather light leg feathering?
Feathering goes down to the toe, and looked great upon hatching, but is somewhat sparse looking right now at 6 weeks.

In the hierarchy of breeding, where does egg color fall?

Is the gene for leg/outside toe feathering the same as middle toe feathering?
Meaning, is middle toe feathering just "too much" feathering?

Reason I ask, I have a great looking little cockerel, but he has probably 4 or 5 middle toe feathers (total)
If he keeps looking so nice, would I use him on a sparsely feathered girl or not at all?? (cull)

How does egg color work?
Do both parents donate the genetics for "paint" on the egg??

Reason I ask, I gave my BCM roo Red Star girls while his BCM ladies were growing up from eggs (he's 1.5yrs now.)
I kept the girls for eating eggs and they are just starting to lay.
and they are laying about a 7!! with one darker!!

So - does that mean my roo, who came from a super dark egg, gives a lot of "paint" to his offspring and his BCM offspring should lay super dark with donations from both parents?
or
is the roo mainly responsible for egg color and his BCM daughters should lay about a 7, too??
(did that make sense?)

Lastly, not my Marans (cochin), but I got a roo from another breeder (I'm just starting out)

He has all the type, color, etc. that I'm looking for BUT he has a sprig on his comb...

I could really use his help with type
or
should I run away from introducing sprigs into my program and find another roo??

In the hierarchy of breeding (build the house, then paint it) where do combs/sprigs lie??

Thanks TONS!!

Happy Holidays!!

Math Ace- I am aware that the cuckoo is not recognized but I have a picture of my Cuckoo Roo with white on its tail feathers. Just curious if you wanted to use it for the SOP thread?
