Super slow night last night. I waited for someone to jump in and answer this.

Christie, I think she has a beautiful amount of copper. How is her chest looking? Are you seeing any brown leakage on her chest?
Black eyes on a copper ARE common, but they are a disqualifier. Some folks have marans that take a long time for that color to change to the proper color.
They start with the black and then it turns to this greyish blue and then moves to the orange pumkin color that you want.

With as much copper as she is showing in her hackles, I would of expected her eyes to of lightened up by now. She may be one of those marans who keeps her black eyes.

This is not a defect that I have breeding experience with. It has not been an issue with my original flock. I did get some marans in from various sources last Spring. BLACK eyes is now one of those issues that I am having to decided if I want to try to take on

.... I do hope that someone who has actual hands on with this issue will join us today and let us know how successful they have been in over coming it

Well, folks, I set my first 3 BCM pullet eggs on December 4 to hatch on Christmas Day. They were HUGE eggs for pullet eggs and they were her first 3 eggs so there was not any good reason to think ANY of them would hatch. First one was SO big, in fact, that it very well could have been a double yolker. Well, surprise, surprise, all 3 of them hatched - one on Christmas Day, one yesterday, and one overnight last night. I have 3 more BCMs in my flock!!!!!

Christie~
I agree with Math about the amount of copper she has and it is beautiful!

I don't think that she is one that is going to get the correct eye color, but only the next couple of months will tell. I have and do breed girls with dark eyes to a male with correct eyes and get good results but that is only when I use one specific male. When I used my pure Davis male over the dark eyed girls I would get a mix, some correct and some dark. The only thing you can do is the test mate her and see what she will produce but of course you need a male and to wait until she give you some of those pretty eggies.

MATH ACE~ Are those the 2 girls you hatched out of eggs from me? I say test mate them to a male with correct eye color and see what happens, you might be pleasantly surprised.

Hi! Welcome to the Marans thread!

The cuckoo/barred gene is sexlinked (the female cuckoo can only pass along the cuckoo/barring gene to her male offspring) so this mating will produce all cuckoo/barred males and all black pullets that may show some copper or gold looking leakage upon maturity. The cuckoo males from this cross may also show some copper or gold leakage upon maturity as well.
You won't be able to see the barring on the males until they start to feather out.

You cannot get Splash offspring unless you are breeding a Blue to a Blue, or a Blue to a Splash, or a Splash to a Splash.

Hope this helps!

Morning!
We had a fabulous holiday with the kids, only one wasn't able to make it as he had to work. Would have been perfect if he was here too, but we understand.

Got 2 Marans eggs for Christmas and a Barnevelder egg from a new layer. It was a good day!

awesome!

I'm glad you had most of your family there! And eggies to boot! Good day!
I have an egg thats been popping up for the last few days that is the most russet color...if I get another one today I'll take a pic of it. Having family here sure puts a dent on using eggs, that's for sure. Between baking and cooking they go quick!

Good morning all

Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas!

I found a present left for me on my front porch yesterday. I had put a large trash bags full of cans to be recycled on the front porch, to remind me to take it to the garage. It was knocked over, so when I went to set it up, there behind it were 4 Marans eggs, laid on a coiled up electric cord!

They were obviously left by two different girls, so I can't call them slackers any more. Guess it's time to make a better nest for the free rangers...silly girls!
