Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Oh Wolfgang is so pretty! I had a pair of wild Mitreds, and one Nanday in the outside aviary. Talk about loud! At sunrise and every time it rained, those Mitreds would go off on a tangent, with an ever escalting clacka, clack, CLaka, CLACKA!!! Some times for hours! Then I had 2 pairs of Maroon Bellied conures in the living room. Talk about lucking out finding them! I went to the pet store in the mall, and the guy had the flight cage full of different birds. Cockatiels, parakeets, finches, and these. I asked about them, and he said he wanted $110.00/pair. I went back a week later, and he asked me if I had any Cockatiels. Well yes, I do. I traded him 4 Lutino Cockatiels for all 4 of the Maroons! When he got them boxed up, he asked me with a smirk, "what are you going to do, breed them??" Yup. He just laughed. Had a 4x4x4' cage in the living room, added two nest boxes, and within the week, they had paired off and started laying!! Both pairs raised 3 chicks their first clutch!

Good Luck with your hatch! We are taking the eggs out of the turner and setting out on the hatching shelves today and will see how it goes, we did end up setting another 36 eggs last night in our other bator.

No wonder you have a NO Jamaica fund; you have Mexico in your back yard!! I love it!! When I lived in CA, we had a family across the street where the father played in a Mariachi band. When they would practice, (which would go on for hours!) all of my Conures in the aviary in the back yard would scream and dance! I thought it was hilarious, my other neighbors...not so much.

Party poopers!

We LOVE the band that goes on and on (literally all day until it is dark, but doesn't bother us in the slightest, no need to play the radio) .........and we love having them as neighbors...they are truly, truly good people and man o man do they ever have a huge family! I thought I had a lot of siblings, neices and nephews. Got some fresh homemade tortillas and Pisulli (sp?) right before Christmas! YUM!!!!!!!

Oh yes, the fresh tortillas!! I would grow jalapenos in my garden, and take some to Lupi. She would make me some homeade salsa every time! My daughter was only 2 at the time, and she wondered why she could not understand what Migel was saying. I told her he didn't speak very much of our language, so she wanted to learn how to talk to Migel. Of course, I took French in High school, my brother, who married a French gal took Spanish!

But I taught her to say hello. So, every morning she would stand at the front fence until Migel would come out. "Buenas dias, Migel!" "Buenas dias, Stephanie!" . Neither one of them ever got her name right, Tiffany, but she didn't care. Those are such precious memories for me!

thanks!!!

did I miss a post from VC yesterday regarding info. about the carnation comb discussion????

we have been fighting colds and flu here this past week, finally got our heat back up and running on Wed with our new furnance so I might have missed something on it. Today my one ear is stuffed up and everytime the dogs back it echos funny in my head.

planning to go and take some updated pictures of the babies again- they are coming up on 7 weeks old and hopefully the camera will do a good job getting the pictures- very interesting! Be back a bit later with the pictures.

Anybody on here use Flexwatt? I am going to start a new incubator project and would like to convert to flexwatt. I would also like to use it in my brooders for heat as well. I started a thread and was told to use a different thermostat (Water heater stat is what I use now), but I don't understand why? I don't see any thermostats that look like they will do what I need it to do without being 12v and I don't want to convert it... too much trouble.

One suggestion was a wafer thermostat anybody use those and how do they work? Pic please!

I found a free wine fridge.... if they get back with me

either way I am building a new bator, starting this weekend.

Morning, everyone!
I have been laying low on the comb conversations.
I didn't want to jinx myself. Just secretly

doing this, because I have had no stupid combs.
Perfection, but still early enough to get the whammy.
So the other night, I picked up a chick, and FULL BLOWN carnation.

I just felt the bottom of my stomach fall out.
NOOOOOO! So then I noticed, NO feathers on the legs.

The only mutt in the bunch! I missed the brown feathers, it was dark in the bathroom.
Not a Marans. SOOOOO happy, so far.
I know there is a birthday in here somewhere, I've just forgotten who....
And everyone have a happy and safe New Years!
I can't wait to get some of Wynette's eggies, they will be a welcome addition to all the other babies I already hatched.

And, I have babies on order from a very well known DARK egg lady. My car is gonna be a mess on the way home!

So what bird is it that had the Carnation?? Don't get too cocky, if you are still getting in different birds/eggs, it will eventually get you! Just saying....
