Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Last bird - promise!

Here's that cockerel in the daylight:

Here's a close up of his comb with the tiny thumbprint (?) in the blade

Ok - if you're still looking at my pics:

Everyone has a good comb - no sprigs, but a couple do have a twist.
Everyone, except the splash girl, has feathered legs

Am I on the right track??
See anyone to get rid of?

Is the cockerel a keeper (at least for now, until/if his tail comes back??)

His comb is a little scary, can you get a better side shot of it?
It's not the thumbprint that has me concerned, but almost like a side sprig back there...

I'll try - it's def not a sprig.
I can't explain, it's the edge of the thumbprint....not an outward projection, but like a wrinkle - ?? -

I'll get Mr. C to hold him tonight and get a better pic of comb from the side and from the back, so you can see better.

This is my splash girl.

She's so pretty!
I'd love to have her in my yard!!

Is my girl Splash? Is she a Sport?

Whatever she is, she's terribly shy

Here's another question, though it seems I've stopped the thread in it's tracks with all my pics!!

In looking at all my pics posted, as well as, Roberta's Splash -
I see tails that are sort of fanned from top to bottom (Roberta's Splash and some of my BCM girls)
and I see tails that are sort of folded up (like my BM girls)

which tail is preferred?
or is it a maturity thing??

Marcy - I'm relatively new at this, too, but:

Pin feathers - Day 1-3ish
males have even pins
females have long mixed with short pins

For my genetics - Day 3 to probably 10 days
males have long primaries and then short secondariees
females - same length

My females also have WAY more tail, way sooner than the males
In all actuality, they seem to feather just that little bit quicker than the males overall!

I'm about 99% accurate with sexing Day 3-10
I'm not as good with pin feathers...so I just wait!!

"Splash" can come in varying degrees of white with spots. My understanding is that typically, first generation Splash are generally the most spotted - but - I'm not the most experienced breeder here.

Do you think that splash to splash would create whiter and whiter "splash"?
