yay! you have babies too! What all do you have in this hatch! I'm thinking I'm within a month or month and a half of setting my first eggs. It'll be interesting...but I think far more controlled than last year with doing only single matings

we hatched Andalusians, Welsummer and Lt Brown Leghorn- bantam this is the 1st hatch of the year for the kids 4-H projects

YaY!!!!! That sounds like a good hatch Hens! How many Wellies did you set again?

we set 25 Wellies and are at almost 19 hatched - 6 eggs not sure what they are doing yet- they could still be working on the inside

Question for those that hatch and not even being breed specific- we had a couple of the chick who for whatever reason managed to pip the egg and work on zipping and then end up coming out backwards- anyone else ever have this happen?

I am hoping to use the 1 Blue Copper Marans girl (from the eggs we hatched from you Pink) in with the group of 7 once they mature and do some testing on her a well. She lays a nice colored eggs maybe 6 on the chart.

Sounds like a pretty nice hatch with the Wellies!!!! Right on!

Can't wait to hear of the results of this Blue Copper gal....the imput I can get the better and I am very very appreciative Hens. Thank you!

I have seen a few chicks do this when hatching and I have always wondered how the heck they get all mixed up about things....even more so I am amazed that they manage to get out at all. I can say that I have only seen one chick do this since I started hatching in the egg carton...I've also had better hatch rates hatching in the carton. I saw it with the other few chicks when I was hatching on their sides and the other chicks were allowed to play hockey with them.
How did my kids end up being right side up the entire time I was incubating them and then at the very end they all were born breech.

Hey Kim...did you see those pics of Gigantor I put up? The earliest pics I posted were from when he had already thinned out roughly half of the red on the breast...I swear he was at least 80% overcoloring. This makes me very curious about what he might do with my blue and black girls that show no color as he never has been mossy or had other color issues....its gonna be an interesting year!

we had 3 this hatch, they are all out and seem to be doing fine at this point- as we move them out of the bator we will look them over and tag them according to who the rooster was, as we are working on building 3 lines of Andalusians and 2 lines of Wellies for DD to work with- there will be some hard culling going on as well. Have to sit down with our records and up date the information sheets. Have go and read the link you posted! Reading a book: Genetics of the Fowl by F.B. Hutt that a friend has.

Good mornin' all!

Boy oh boy! Winter decided to make an appearance here this morning! 26* and the wind is howling again! Glad I cleaned and filled the waterers last night, no hose today! But then the rest of the week, it's back into the 40s-60s!

Vicki ~ I saw that good lookin' boy of yours! I think he has just the right amount of red in the breast to help color up the girls!!

I still think he is one of the nicest BCM roos I've seen yet. Get on that NPIP thing lady!

Took my guys out of the 'bator - 3 BCM and a huge, fuzzy blue!!
The other 3 died in the egg - the eggs were all the same girl and the shell was SO hard that it cut my finger! (yikes!)

What do you guys do with the babies in the eggs with that kind of shell??
Do you help them?

Congrats to everyone on their New Years hatches!!

What age do you give your pullets/hens and cockerels/roos for the final inspection as to whether they're staying for breeding? My hens just seem to keep filling out and the oldest are @8mths old.
The roos are nearly 2 and just turned 1yr, and the young, no tail guy is about 5-6mths.

We hatched eggs in one of the Autistic Support rooms I work in over right before Thanksgiving! Several of them LOVED it and still ask about the "baby chick"

I don't help. I helped a couple with my first hatch and it was a mistake. So now, if they hatch, they hatch. If they don't hatch, I take notes, ask questions, and attempt to learn from the experience. (And, I shed a few tears because they all DO matter to me. But I get over it.

I had a severely autistic teen visit me Christmas Eve. Once we got him comfortable he was able to meet my 5 week old chicks. My Silkie was absolutely fabulous with him. We then graduated to the coop with the layers. Several of my girls are VERY friendly and very touchy feely so he was able to touch and stroke them. He was having a BALL. Then he started talking to the birds - chicken style. He had at least half a dozen of them talking back to him - including a young cockerel. He was laughing and having a WONDERFUL time. We had his poor mother in tears because of all the joy that day.
