Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Don,

Yes, you are correct, Ruth's birds are quite lovely with the correct color pattern. However, what prompted me to ask the question is the fact that most of the hens I've seen in the USA, only have the copper pattern going on the head and down the backside of the neck. Now that I know the correct pattern is what is called for in the US SOP, that will be what I breed for...among many other things

Debbi, soon as the standard is approved by the APA and more people go to see the marans at shows and even show the Marans you will see more proper colored Marans. The APA and ABA judge will also have to be educated on what the standard says, the proper way to help educate the Judge is show what the standard calls for and it will help all concerned. Anyone showing at the Feb. show only take your outstanding Type and color birds as they should be uniforn to be approved. I have not seen very many good birds in type and color being showed.

Great advice!

Ok...that is good to hear. I could not find any pictures online of a blue birchen. Any major faults that yousee?

Now what sort of a breeding situation should I put him in?

Haha! I am the breeder that sold the Marans to Criker99. This chick is from a Golden cuckoo pair. I have gotten 3 so far that look the same, one I thought was a fluke and gave it to a friend. I am waiting for the juvenile pics. The 2nd two are still young. The other chicks from this pair are the golden cuckoo chicks. dark brown with a white spot on the head

I keep my Marans in their own pens with their colors of Black Copper, Silver, and Golden Cuckoo. I am thinking the chicks are appearing to be a throwback color of recessiveness, possibly a paler color of the Golden cuckoo.

Here in the US, Brown Red females should have copper on the top part of the breast. Most of the BCM's I have seen are pretty dark and tend to lack the copper on the throat or top of the breast. Now....this is just what I have seen at the last few shows I attended. One was the first qualifying meet for the BCM's. This coloring of the females seems to match the proposed SOP description.

I was incorrect about no shade of slate being listed for the leg color. It says: Dark Slate, bottom of feet pinkish white.

Walt

The BC female have been well represented on BYC. Ruth, has showed some picture of the Female that are colored real good. For the most part some of mine are dark this year since I really concentrated on type and size, will work more on the color this year as I have enough decent female to make color breedings.

WOW !!!! Thanks!!!!

Maybe they have ones without white feathers, with the five point comb, tail feathers at 45 degree or less, AND AND AND lays a really dark egg . . . .
