Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

If someone sells mixed up Eggs why would I want to IM them instead of saying what I have to say on the open forum. The reason people get by selling this junk is because no one will say they are junk. These eggs were bought on BYC so the truth should be known.

Great point! I get the whole teenager/hormone thing. If a young rooster is perfect to begin with, I totally agree with trying to work through his aggression issues. I base a lot of my freezer camp policy on the old "three strikes, you're out" philosophy. One fault, I can work with...2 can be managed as well. But if bad temperament is a 3rd fault...adios.

Haha I like that three strikes rule lol. I try to sell or give away mine before freezer camp so at least someone else could enjoy them and they could live a nice life if possible.

I'm sooo cheating on my marans tonight. I have 5 of the cutest baby silkies in the bator and a bunch more pips

I am totally crippled now because I stepped on a nail in the yard and it went right through my sandal and halfway through my foot earlier today. So I am hobbling between the bed and the incubator lol.

It's always to get an egg from your own coop. When I got my first 7 after 2 years of breeding my guys I was jumping for joy! Yay for your egg:weee

I agree. So many people don't know what they are selling and you really need to know the breed. I studied the Marans for 2 years.

I have to ask - is this a running joke, kind of an inside thing, that I'm not in on?????

I don't see any French Black Copper Marans chicks in those photos.

The Black Copper have the white fronts as chicks. Two are feathered legs so from the Black copper breeders. It's hard to tell until they are older anyways. The feathers come in and then you will really know

I have no clue what the inside joke is.

The golden from the golden cuckoos generally is derived from crossing in Copper Black with the cuckoo, from what I have read. Not saying that is the only way to get other colors to show up in a golden cuckoo, just saying that copper black does not produce chipmunk markings and neither does black, which is the base for cuckoo. Wheatens don't look like that either. I did have a Dark Brahma rooster go a'courtin' last summer and had to home hatch some eggs until the period of questionable blood was passed, and did hatch three little birdies that looked a lot like your chipmunk feller... just saying... He got over some barred olive eggers and that is how the babies turned out. They went to non-breeder homes. (snake food, to be exact)

French Black Copper Marans chicks are black and white with feathered legs at hatch. Their legs are sort of slate colored and their feet are sort of tan. I don't see any chicks that meet that description. The all black one with feathered legs has all dark legs and feet - not a French Black Copper Marans.

Are you sure you have your birds separated?

Golden Cuckoo Marans are the same colour as Crele in OEG.
Whilst pseudo Golden Cuckoo Marans can be made from a BC X Cuckoo they will not be the correct colour, they will be crow wing (black wing triangle)rather than the required duckwing (cinnamon wing triangle).
Golden Cuckoo should be based on the e+ wildtype duckwing, as are Golden Salmons & Silver Salmons.
The eb Brown gene, which has been inherited from both parents, indicates a cross has been made in the past.
More maybe seen as it feathers out.
