Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Sooooo, how did these Silver Salmon hens place?
And is that white in the wing triangle of the Silver Black Birchen? Do you happen to have another photo of this guy? If not, no biggie but I sure am curious as to the white wing triangle.

I posted the cards for the hens a few posts after the pics..... and I explained that there are no other pics of this guy because my camera dies and this was the last pic taken...I can post the pic of his cage card... I've got to take the kids to band practice right now... I'll do it in an hour or so when I return

Yes I am still reading and thanks. No need to post the card for him....I was just curious. Thanks for taking the time to post all the photos.

Same in the horse world -

For example - in dressage, ANY blood is a DQ

So - you have to be SURE you don't feed your horse peppermint treats (pink) before the ride!
B/c pink saliva is assumed to be blood in the mouth n- immediate DQ, they don't even check.
(ask me how I know

)

Same for unauthorized equipment of any kind - horse or rider

No questions - just DQ.

Drawing blood at a horse show is perhaps just slightly different than a questionable comb or earlobes. A lopped comb is DQ'd in a single combed male when it is "lopped below the horizontal plane of the point where the bend occurs". Perhaps the judge felt the comb didn't meet this mark. Clearly, the judge at Newnan wasn't afraid to DQ birds when he/she felt it was merited.

My point was NOT that anybody who takes the trouble to prepare for and go to the show should place just for showing up but rather those of us NOT going to all that trouble perhaps shouldn't be so quick to criticize so harshly when we haven't done the same and are only judging a photograph from the comfort of our chair. No one denies the Marans breed still has a long way to go - including those that ARE getting their birds out there and getting us on the map.

Folks don't necessarily suddenly think their birds are perfect just because they placed at a show. (Although some folks seem to think their birds are perfect even if they don't place at a show!) It was simply the best that was available on the day. The situation will no doubt improve when those of you with your flawless Marans get out there and start raising the bar.

I have no clue what happened to the last post or how Cad's post go there, but will say that I agree with Slick, Cad and Vicki about the DQ's and going to shows. I grew up showing horses and we knew of the DQ's, faults and such prior to the event or gate and were turned away just as Cad and Slick mention and didn't not show.

Touching back to something that Barb said last night and I was so frustrated with my computer I unplugged it, but wanted to say that I appreciate the folks that took the time to take their birds and those who do take their birds out to the shows for recognition and promotion of the breed. The appreciation for the time they spend prepping, driving and so on does not go unnoticed by me.....but the lack of preparation, information and knowledge on the part of the judge in this instance has me very disappointed. I'm not bashing the APA either...but don't the judges read and go by the same APA SOP book that we do? This is where I am a little confused. If I had been judging....I would have had my handy dandy SOP book in my hot little hands to refer to. The 1st 30 pages or so of this book are very informative.
Also, I'm a little dissapointed that these folks walked away perhaps thinking nothing is wrong with the bird and possibly not even offered some information on faults and DQ's so that they are aware and as others have stated....they will probably go on breeding their show quality birds and selling the offspring that will likely have these traits as well and then the folks that bought them will show up asking questions about their Marans with the white ear-lobes, sprigged combs, lopped combs, thought they bought Silver Birchens and they really got Silver Salmons instead....the list goes on. See where I am going with that?
I certainly mean no offense to anyone with my opinions, merely venting.

I will say that this breed has come a very very long way and I applaud everyone that is working with them....but I beg folks to atleast become somewhat oriented with the breed or breeds that we are showing or working with so that we know what they are suppose to be.

Remember too, that to get a variety recognized by the APA, that it needs to be proven that that color was shown for so many years prior...
So for us to get Cuckoo (or any variety) approved, we need to get ANYTHING in the show to get them on record.
Sorry, but that's the way it is, ugly or not.....

Hello everyone !! o/

This is my first post here . I have just recently got in to raising chickens ::))) I have got a Black Copper Marans 1 year old Rooster and 3 im not sure hens !! They kinda of look like Welsummer
But im not sure ! My ? is What do you think about cross breeding the BCM Rooster with Rhode Island Red hens . The reason i ask is cause i just got 12 RIR chicks today complements of momma .. Lol Just looking to see if anyone knows anything about this or have tried this . Thank You.

Welcome!

This cross should be a nice meaty type cross and the females should be great layers of nice brown eggs.

Welcome x2

I've crossed my BCM roo with my Red Star (golden comet, etc.) hens while he was waiting for his girls to grow up.

The cross is a nice, meaty bird! The pullets have been laying @6-7 eggs a week and the colors range from 3-5, with the white pullets (not sex-linked coloring anymore) laying a lighter egg and the black pullets laying a darker egg. Nice, easy going personality, too!

I'd think the results would be similar for your RIR!

I promised pics of birchens and I don't seem to be able to find them... I seem only have Silver Salmons saved in my photobucket...

So, either I have more pics to upload or they were next when the camera died

Sorry, but I disagree here. That was the problem with the first go around for approval with the BCMs! Everyone was dragging their crap birds to the shows, just to up the numbers. The result was the APA decided there was no sort of uniformity, so they would not approve the breed. Then there were the flurries of e-mails and pleas for everyone to just bring their "good" birds for the next go around, and then they were approved. The old adage, "QUALITY, not quantity" sure applies here! I still think the judges need to judge by the SOP, and not by comparison! If no birds are worthy of holding up to the standard, then NO ribbons should be awarded...period.
