Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

So legs kinda refers to the whole thing but the shank is a certain part of the leg?

Yes you are right. In the 2001 SOP on page 5 they give a definition for all these term. I am not really that smart I just know where to look for the answers. Don

Hi ya Randy! Is the word "Dimorphic"? As in sexually dimorphic?? I do not know the answer to the other question, but I do know some people breed one line specifically for roos, and another for hens. Wonder if ever the twain shall meet??

Are you thinking of the 2 lines where 1 produces good quality boys and the other produces good quality girls, I have a book that talks about these lines but a friend is reading it right now. I think that the line that produces the girls uses a rooster showing hen feathering charateristics. Maybe someone else would be able to answer this better.

ok... here is a really dumb question..
I am looking at the standard. I know what toes, thighs and legs are... what the heck are the shanks?? I just assumed it was the legs...but legs are mentioned separately?

Think of a chicken leg like a people leg wearing Bermuda shorts. The thigh of the chicken is hidden in the fluff, but is the large bulbous part of the leg (as in fried chicken legs). The hock of a chicken looks like a backwards human knee joint. The shank is the long straight part (think human calf), where the shank feathers are supposed to be. Below that is an ankle, and a foot. The term "leg" would be the whole thing. Gees, now I'm craving fried chicken!

Yes. Never tried it yet with chickens...yet, When I bred dogs and wanted a nice, beefy male; I would use one really doggie female. This girl produced the most awesome males, but the female offspring weren't very typey or feminine looking. Same with the females, I used a more refined male over a standard female, and usually got some very nice females.
