Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Vicki, I love that boy's width and color!!! Gigantor that is.

Thanks Lady! I kinda like him myself. I also like that cuckoo boy...he's gonna be a monster. He just turned 4 and a half months and is almost as tall as Gigantor is now. I am going to see if I can find this pic I took earlier today that is pretty funny, but it might be a wee bit out of focus, can't remember.

ok...the chickens are kind of far away in this pic, but its as far in as I could crop without cropping out the chickens

This is Gigantor and that little BCM bantam girl I have that I showed before. Check out the size difference, its so comical to me. Excuse the crazy feather and flapping waddle....it was super windy today.

Think of a chicken leg like a people leg wearing Bermuda shorts. The thigh of the chicken is hidden in the fluff, but is the large bulbous part of the leg (as in fried chicken legs). The hock of a chicken looks like a backwards human knee joint. The shank is the long straight part (think human calf), where the shank feathers are supposed to be. Below that is an ankle, and a foot. The term "leg" would be the whole thing. Gees, now I'm craving fried chicken!

Hmmm . . . Kentucky Fried CHicken! Oops KFC! It's not fried.

That's crazy, he looks 3 feet tall!

haha...you aren't probably all that far off. Last time I measured him to the top of his comb he was about 26" and that was when he was about 8 months old..... maybe I need to do a recheck again. I always say its a good thing my boys are sweet, cause they could do some serious damage if they had half a mind to since they are so huge.

They know mama has a fix for that too

Vicki- what are you feeding those boys!? They're huge (and beautiful!)

That little bantam girl is sooo cute, especially standing next to gigantor!!

On the topic of genetics - Can anyone tell me about the genetics for a twist in the comb, as well as the genetics for a thumb print?? pretty please??

haha...I probably don't feed them anything different than most people...they do get fresh fruit and veggie treats and lots of running around time freeranging. Mostly I just know what I like and cull for certain traits and big wide tanker birds is what I love.

I love the chunky ones, too!

Give me a decade (or two or three...) and I hope I'll start seeing the progress some of you guys are celebrating!!

(I just hope I have my eye more developed in order to get there!!)
