Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Our first Marans babies are a week old today!!! They are growing so fast! The little Golden Salmon Marans are still the little brooder bullys. I love that my little blue splashs are feathering where I am starting to see some color. Can't wait to see how they turn out! (just ignore the little Black Australorps since they aren't marans, lol)

Test mating is what's been on my mind since these combs started showing and is certainly a possibility if I ever get the time to finish the breeding pens and incubator. I just wasn't sure if it was worth the effort, but I'm thinking since they are faults it might be. A kid has gotta start with something, ya know.

Hi Slick - I've been asking about the genetics on the twisted comb, as well as, the thumb print, too!

I haven't gotten any answers either, so I think it's just a matter of - no one knows for sure!!

Your babies are so adorable! What are the little brown striped (chipmuncky)ones? Are those the Golden Salmmon Marans? So many chicks have that look- I've had them myself in the past (I forget which ones though!)
My Marans are hatching- so far I've only got a BCM out and a Blue OE out, but 6 eggs are pipped, and about 20 more have to still pip...today is day 21. So egg-citing! Keep posting pics of your fuzzy butts- I love seeing them!

The little brown chicpmuncks are the Golden salmon marans. They are a hoot to watch. Their wings aren't feathering as fast as the Blue Splash Marans but they definatly have the authority in the brooder. We don't have an incubator so a friend is hatching for us. Last week hatched 13 eggs (3 Golden Salmon, 5 Blue Splash, and 5 Black Australorps), this week he said 23 eggs moved to the hatcher. I am praying a few of those are a french cuckoo marans. We should be able to pick them up tonight. Then so far for the next 3 weeks we have chicks hatching.

Where did you get your Golden Salmons?

I had a surprise GS pop up out of my BCM eggs and was wondering about the genetics!

Are they all the same age?
If so, it looks like your Splash might be girls and your GS, boys! That might be why they're the bullies!

Slick~

It's my experience that twisted combs will breed forward. Probably best not to breed the twists if breeding for show quality birds or birds being bred to the standard...but if you are just breeding for dark eggs then it is not a problem.

I remember reading wayyyyyy back in this thread somewhere about the Trilling sound the chicks make...and someone said they swear they can sex them by who makes the noise. As mine are hatching and resting in the bator, I hear that Trilling sound (along with the cheeping noises....) I love that sound and wonder if both the males and females make it, or as that member wrote- one makes it more.
So far, 1 BCM, 1 Blue (or silver?) OE (it hasn't dried all the way yet) and 1 Splash Marans (just popped the top of the shell off so that one is soaking wet still.
Lots of pips, and I'm so excited to be home today to watch this....

We bought our one roo and two hens from a breeder in South Oklahoma and our other roo and hen came from Choctaw,OK (another breeder we know). I would love that our splash are girls. They are all the same age all hatched last Tues/Wends. One splash was a hold out we got there at 7 to pick them up and he/she was still a bit wet from hatching, lol. My BCM are only 4 months old so not laying yet. I can't wait to hatch some from them this fall.
