Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have to share this - the first of 4 pens that I've just completed. Quite proud of myself, if I do say so myself.

The boys seem very happy in there. Next pen - a SILKIE pen! I hope ...

They are cute! Love the blue color of the first 2.
I agree with Hens and Roos and I believe they are all cockerels. The Splash I believe is just slow to mature compared to the other 2.

I was so hopeful that the splash are all girls as they all look the same.

I also have 2 b/s marans that are only a week old. I hope they are girls.

According to the genetics stuff I've been reading, F1 to F1 (brother/sister) gets F2. I assume mother/son - father/daughter (a new P) keeps regenerating F1. I've been told the ideal is father/daughter - mother/son breedings. Sibling breedings are sometimes necessary to get started or if you don't have enough stock. However, what Debbi said is absolutely correct as well.

I was JUST trying to remember this info and went and looked it up.

Bird A x Bird B = F1

F1 x F1 = F2

F1 x parent bird A = B1A (back cross to parent A)

F1 x parent bird B = B1B

Now were I get confused... what would B1A x B1B = ?? B2AB?

Or how about B1A x B1A = B2A?

Nice, I can't wait till my breeding pens get done, 2 are being built right now, I am not a Barn Goddess as you, wish I was. I have an Amish friend building mine. First 2 will cost 250$. Does it sound like a lot? Just the wire pulling is worth it to me, I hate doing fencing. LOL But you did a great job. Is that in a garage or barn? I would like to do that in our garage.

Garage. I was storing hay for the horses in there but I have need for more chicken space. I still have hay in the other end so I get to take a bit of a break from building until I get that all moved out and into the actual barn.

Oh my, I feel like I'm in that 9th grade Algebra class, all I did was stare at the teacher with this stupid look on my face, and the teacher asking me why am I looking at him like I was going to be sick, and all I could say was "How the heck can you add A and B and get C. I didn't do too well in his class, but I sat next to a very cute boy, who knew what he was doing, we shared notes

. But I won't give up until I understand this, really I not dumb, it just takes a while. Oh I got it maybe someone could draw some pictures for me.
So I go to the Ohio Nationals and win a pair of White Ameraucana Bantams. They would be.....
Bird A and Bird B....add them together and you get F-1 Right
You then take F-1 (boy) and F-1 (girl) add them together and you get F-2 right
Then you can take Bird A (father) and F-1 (daughter) and you get B1A
Where the heck did the A come from ? AHHHHHHHHHHH

I knew there was a reason why I hated Algebra, you shouldn't be adding letters its to confusing.
