Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ohhhh...porcelain and lavenders! YUMMY! They are sooooooo pretty. I also kinda like the looks of the partridge...is that what Debbi's avatar is? Good luck can't wait to see them!
Yes, my avatar, "Kramer", is a Partridge. I really need a newer pic, that was some time ago. They change colors so drastically from month to month, and he is still young yet and hasn't gotten his adult plumage.

Today...my husband and I are going to butcher some roosters.

I have a 7 month old marans that was my first marans ever and I swore he would always have a home here but... he has to go. His comb is terrible, he has middle toe feathers, he looks solid blue but he is really blue copper. I tried using him for olive eggers but he gets into the nest box and breaks all the eggs.

I also have a 7 month old blue rock who is mean. Always going for my legs. Don't need him at all. I don't even raise plymouth rocks.

Now here is where I am debating. I also have a 2 or 3 month old splash marans cockerel with a side sprig already. I should do him also. I can cook him up whole and feed him to my other animals.

Ugh!!! We have never done this, I watched all the youtube videos I could. It has taken ages to get my husband convinced that it is a necessary part of raising chickens. I hope I don't throw up!

I intend to hatch a lot of chicks in the future. We must be able to do this.

if it were me, id process the splash as well. Its hard, and will feel weird probably the first few times, but it is part of raising poultry and really does give a stronger connection to providing some for oneself or your other animals. Just take a deep breath and tell yourself what you need to while you are doing it. It will get easier.

You'll are very brave. I helped ONE time with 5 roos.
Now I've found a place not too far from me that will process my birds for $2 a piece.
Best of luck Christie.

I am a real animal lover, I slow down for all of them that are in the road... It really upsets me if I should hit one. It is really not that bad. I could watch just fine while my DH and DS took care of the killing part. I was a supervisor of everything. We used a killing cone we borrowed from a fellow chicken lover. The videos will help a lot. I will probably not ever do it again... it was not worth the effort when I can sell them for $5 and go buy one already cooked at Sams for the same price.

You should cull all you can when you do it.

Good luck Christie, at least you have your hubby to help you! Start with the mean one, if he flogs you one more time, it will make it easier for you!
