Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

He is almost 4 mons. I was pleased with how he was fattening up, concerned a little with hackle color.... but generally feeling okay about him. Then, the white feathers. I'll try to get pics. We've got some hot dry weather and I've got quite a bit more watering to do before getting the lil one to the dentist for an abcess.
Is it one feather, a couple, or all of them? He is still young and will still change alot before you see everything he is going to be or not be. My advise is to wait as long as you can before making the freezer decision, unless there is something for sure you can see right now, like a carnation comb, or webbed feet, squirrel tail and so on. Hope the little one feels better soon. :)

I have a quick question, I bought 2 dozen FBCM hatching eggs from someone local. I was told to be a good breeder. I hatched them out got 19 chicks from 24 eggs, not a bad hatch IMO. BUT they are supposed to be FBCM and 6 are not feather legged, and 2 hatched out with stripes like a chipmunk???? They look like my Golden Salmon Marans do at hatch. Is that possible? I though maybe he had accidentally picked up Golden Salmon eggs but these little chicks have blond fuzz on their legs so they are going to be feather legged. Not sure what to think.

Donna~ The 2 blue boys from Raven? They would have blood from the birds that I shipped in from Florida and there is every possibility that they may have thrown this.....infact, I would be surprized if they didn't. Who knows what they had in them. If it is from those boys, it would be the first that showed this....even coming from the crappy birds blood. I look forward to watching this with you as far as you take it....before culling. This will be a great learning curve if you keep her for a while.

Did you also say that she was a chick with coppery or red head at hatch?

Yes, the Salmon Marans popping up is completely and entirely possible. Lucky you!

And yes...sometimes, even though all parent stock have feathered legs, they can produce offspring that are clean legged or sparsely feathered.
What this means is....atleast 2 (possibly more) of the birds in the parent stock (the rooster and 1 or more of the hens), each carry 1 recessive gene for clean shanks and when combined, both contribute their 1 recessive gene to their offspring and 1+1 = 2 copies of the clean shanked gene, therefore the chick will express a clean shank. Hope this helps.

Got my strawberries watered, fence somewhat fixed?? Appointment with butcher is tomorrow... this is the best I could do for pics, I'm really having trouble uploading. The white is on the tips of the feathers on his outer toe... um talon? What do you think?

Blarney~ I personally would not worry about the white at this time and would let him grow out if you have the room and means. The white on the tips could molt out.

I agree with Pink white tips on the shank feathering normally molts out. I would be watching for other things first
