Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Donna~ The 2 blue boys from Raven? They would have blood from the birds that I shipped in from Florida and there is every possibility that they may have thrown this.....infact, I would be surprized if they didn't. Who knows what they had in them. If it is from those boys, it would be the first that showed this....even coming from the crappy birds blood. I look forward to watching this with you as far as you take it....before culling. This will be a great learning curve if you keep her for a while.

Did you also say that she was a chick with coppery or red head at hatch?
She came from Raven..... I will keep an eye out. Not sure which blue one she is. Hubby like them, maybe I will keep one just to see what happens. The eggs they hatched from DID NOT come from the 2 roos I have. If it happens again, I may have to single mate them to find out.

Yes, the Salmon Marans popping up is completely and entirely possible. Lucky you!

And yes...sometimes, even though all parent stock have feathered legs, they can produce offspring that are clean legged or sparsely feathered.
What this means is....atleast 2 (possibly more) of the birds in the parent stock (the rooster and 1 or more of the hens), each carry 1 recessive gene for clean shanks and when combined, both contribute their 1 recessive gene to their offspring and 1+1 = 2 copies of the clean shanked gene, therefore the chick will express a clean shank. Hope this helps.

So how will they feather out? Will they feather FBCM colors or the Golden Salmon colors? Hmmmm I can see some possibilities if they feather Salmon, lol.

I am not sure how they will feather out as I have never had it happen here in my birds. Hope more come by to voice their opinions. If you keep one it will be fun watching it grow with you. I love the Salmon Marans and one day will have Silver Blue Salmon Marans.

Glad to hear you all survived the storms okay. I have been dealing with a major predation problem here. Last week something took two olive egger hens. The freerange and much of our property and surrounding area is dense woods. They don't usually go into the woods but on the outskirts of this one corner area. Yesterday 2 full grown Marans hens and a huge rooster went missing as well and they hung out in that same area. These weren't my best breeding stock so wasn't using them in the breeding pens so they freerange. They were still pretty decent birds though!

Whatever is taking them, leaves no sign whatsoever no feathers, etc. I saw an eagle yesterday evening when I was putting the birds up for the night. It was alone and sitting up in a tree near the main coop, the birds were already missing by that time and he wasn't eating anything. I don't know what could have came quietly and took 3 birds in one shot with no feathers lost and in broad daylight..even, unless it was a group of large birds. I haven't seen any dogs around. Once in awhile we have a fox but they come alone. The other 2 OE hens went missing in the late morning sometime.

Hensandroos would love to see your cuckoo babies. I have some cooking right now that are supposed to be feather shanked, can't wait for them to hatch.

Sorry to hear about your chickens missing! I will try and get some pictures, have to dump the camera card as it is full!

Got my strawberries watered, fence somewhat fixed?? Appointment with butcher is tomorrow... this is the best I could do for pics, I'm really having trouble uploading. The white is on the tips of the feathers on his outer toe... um talon? What do you think?

I agree with the others, wait! At 4 months, they haven't even had their juvenile molt yet. Those feathers should molt out and black ones come in. They may go through that again right before they go through their adult molt too.

Hey Lynette, sorry to hear about your birds gone missing! I'm not thinking it was the Eagle if they were in dense woods. They need the room to swoop down, and if they could hit them that fast, there would be a feather burst, I would think? I'm thinking more along the lines of Coyotes or Bobcats, or....the two legged predator???

Yeah! Showgirl eggs arrived all intact...albeit SIX DAYS LATER FROM MICHIGAN!!!

Sure hope at least some of the 11 hatch. Really, all I need is a good NN roo!! A few pullets wouldn't hurt either! Someone is going to have to get after that Kansas City, KS postal hub, they stink! This parcel sat there for FOUR DAYS! All of you shipping eggs and chicks to the midwest, please keep this in mind, and ship only on a Monday! These were shipped Priority from MI to MO. Sheesh!

Morning everyone sure glad you all have made it through the bad storms all in one piece even the West Coast had to get in some wild and woolly weather last week just happy that the wind has calmed down a bit and the weather is going to be springlike for this week high 70's to mid 80's yeah...I was hot yesterday and it was only 70. I have plenty of weeds to get rid of before the ground dries up.....I might have an Annabel she's been so good setting on her eggs but yesterday all I found were 2 dead chicks...I didn't want to disturb her more first time being a broody and all I did glimpse several unhatched eggs so I have hope. In my incubators I have pips today is due day I left my camera at my brother's so I will try with my phone when I have some hatched pretty exciting for me my first hatch of Birchens 20 or so of those good thing I'll be outside mostly

oh yay! more birchens! cant wait to see some pics! I've gotta get some update pics on chicks ive got running around as well.

Well, dang it! I lost a Blue Silkie roo today. He was a real scrapper, and all I can imagine is he was fence fighting with Clyde, got excited and jumped up and hit his head a a wee lean-to I have in the pen with them. So much for that thing, it's gone, but so is Big Boo...

Looks like he just snapped his neck when he hit, he even moved the thing, so he must've hit it hard. Such is life, but now Bossy has all the pretty girls, so he wasn't shedding any tears. The girls were visabley shaken though...
