Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Christi Rhea, I beat your day yesterday..... First the hubby had a flat on the lawnmower and could not fix it. Then I activated a new phone and the battery was dead and I could not find the charger or extra batteries.... panic for about 20mins then switched back to old phone. Hubby then did not have the stuff to fix the flat. LEFT my phone at home after all that.... packed up some little roos to GIVE away, finished farm work loaded them in the trunk of the car dropped hubby at home to cut grass, he left the tire in the car so I had to turn around and go back home. Got stuck in traffice! OH yeah got a notice from CODES that we had to clean up the duplex next door that we DON'T own! Delivered the little roos and got a phone call about an hour later they were ALL DEAD! Heat is my guess in the trunk..... and I am PMS.....

OK I can't top the ear drum thing..... but that was pretty good!

Today is a new day!
Hugs to both you and Christie.....and you are so right......TODAY IS A NEW DAY!!!!!!!!

Flgarden~ Good idea using those tubs. Bet you have great success with them. BTW...please post photos of the paint silkies when you have time....I don't think I have ever seen one. Bet they are cool looking when they mature. :)

Another question about my chicks. Are my boys Black Copper Marans or Blue Copper Marans? They are darker then my girls, but not exactly black.

My girls are lighter, although this one has darker coloring on her head.

Now all 3 of the paints have pips. One has started zipping. One pipped his egg upside down -the ding dong. None of the lavs have pipped yet. A silkie egg that I put in from my own silkies has a pip and the one orpington x marans cross is out running around jumping on the paint eggs trying to encourage them to come out and play. He is huge I cannot believe he fit in that little pullet egg lol. I don't know for certain, but have read, that paints don't always breed true...that they can be black, white, or paint spotted...do you know if that is true? I can't see any fuzz color yet just teeny tiny beaks lol.
Yes, I've heard that too. Seems most folks either throw in a Black or White into the Paint pen. I do know they say breeding back to a Black helps to fill in some of the "pigment holes" in the skin color of the Paints. Have you tried the Paint Silkie thread yet?

Pretty Blue boys! Blues will have a laced look to the feathers, BCM do not. Sometimes it's hard to tell with real dark blues, so check their under coat and watch for lacing.

Well the first paint is out hard to tell fuzz color cuz hes all wet it is light though. He was really bleeding from his umbilicus way more than normal..just puddles so i did the naughty and opened up the bator and took him out and put cornstarch on his belly. had to do it several times. I have hum snuggled against me and typing with one hand lol so he doesn't drag his abdomen and mess it up again.

Thanks for all the tater info! I'm going to try it this year. Lotsa, how in the world do you get the taters out from the bottom with the tires??? I had thought about that, but one article I read said don't do it, could make them toxic?? I will most definately have to cover mine with chicken wire, not so much for the chooks, but the cats will see it as a new and improved toilet, I'm quite sure! Whoever said cats were clean animals was a LIAR!!!
