Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Well the first paint is out hard to tell fuzz color cuz hes all wet it is light though. He was really bleeding from his umbilicus way more than normal..just puddles so i did the naughty and opened up the bator and took him out and put cornstarch on his belly. had to do it several times. I have hum snuggled against me and typing with one hand lol so he doesn't drag his abdomen and mess it up again.
Awww, poor dude! How he seals up for you. Most of the paint chicks I have seen online are born yellow/white, and the spots come in later. Does he have any pink on his legs or toes that you can see? I had some Silkies born with pink toe tips, wasn't sure if they were dark blue or black, but the pigment filled in in about 5 days.

Christi Rhea, I beat your day yesterday..... First the hubby had a flat on the lawnmower and could not fix it. Then I activated a new phone and the battery was dead and I could not find the charger or extra batteries.... panic for about 20mins then switched back to old phone. Hubby then did not have the stuff to fix the flat. LEFT my phone at home after all that.... packed up some little roos to GIVE away, finished farm work loaded them in the trunk of the car dropped hubby at home to cut grass, he left the tire in the car so I had to turn around and go back home. Got stuck in traffice! OH yeah got a notice from CODES that we had to clean up the duplex next door that we DON'T own! Delivered the little roos and got a phone call about an hour later they were ALL DEAD! Heat is my guess in the trunk..... and I am PMS.....

OK I can't top the ear drum thing..... but that was pretty good!

Today is a new day!
Or possibly carbon monoxide fumes. Gees, don't ya just love days like that??

Yes there is some pinkish on the tips of his toes. I was just wondering about that!
I don't remember my other non paint silkies having that but maybe I wasn't looking for it either. Their legs are black now.

When I first read about the pigment holes in the Paints, it made me wonder if mine two pullets could be split for Paint? They do look Black to me now. Both girls and the roo that just commited hari-kari, had the pink toes. The two girls are in with a White male, so should be interesting to see what pops up. For now, I only have one of "the poor man's Paint", a Beautiful Splash girl.

Debbi, have you ever had issues with Silkie chicks fighting??? Mine are 3 and a half weeks old. All 11 hatched together. They are in a 4' by 4' grow out pen. LOADS of space. The two biggest have been fighting like full blown cocks for WAY too long this morning. They are both exhausted. I'm actually wondering if I'm going to have to separate them. I've never seen anything more ridiculous in my life, quite frankly.

Haha I have a couple 'poor man's paints' too. Splash male and female. They are from Bobbi Porto and look pretty good. The male could have a darker pigment in his comb though. It is that dark mulberry but not black color.

The little paint baby has quit bleeding now, so I slipped him back into the bator and threw another wet sponge in there to get the humidity up so I don't shrink wrap anybody (this has worked well in the past anyways lol). He's sleeping now.
I've been reading about the pigment holes on the Paint Silkie thread and trying to wrap my brain around it. There's always something new to learn with these chickens.
I have a white roo, and not a good specimen either, but he developed some faint black barring on his wings and tail so I am wondering if he is a dominant white (that's the one that leaks color right? lol) I thought he was just dirty at first but on close inspection after giving him a good bath it was definite barring. He has way too red of comb and has horns like a polish. I was gonna get rid of him but I kinda like him now. I am not gonna let him breed with my silkie girls though unless trying something experimental with barring or something.

Thank you all for your answers! I've decided to pass on the Craigslist Marans and try to get on a wait list for some Marans chicks in the future or keep looking! If anyone finds any feel free to PM me!

Yes Barb, my first hatch that had two roos in there that seemed to hate each other from the get-go! One Blue, one White. Seeing as how I had 14 in that hatch, I seperated them in half, and put one of each of the trouble makers in their own tub. Seemed to work. Then when I started taking them outside for the day, I would throw them altogther so they didn't forget each other. They were fine all housed together again, until about a month ago. The Blue one (who just recently died) was the instigator, and just would not quit. Problem solved when he fence fought with Clyde, and jumped up and hit his head on a small cover I had in their run. I find now that I am assimilating the F1s in with the Partridge clan, that the hens are just as evil of witches to the newbies as my Marans hens are! The roos could all care less. In fact, Clyde is doing babysitting duties today with Wynette's babies...

Probably best. Listen to that little voice that tells you no. When in doubt, DON'T! Where are you located? You might check out the For Sale (BST) Buy, Sell, Trade section on BYC here. You might be able to find a breeder close to you.
