Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Most people, including judges don't think that is a lot There is 100 pts. to the bird

Walt, just a question , have you ever seen a chicken win with wrong color eyes or two with different eye color? With most show judging by the comparison method I guess it would be possible. I could see a bird winning in this case but it would not be able to advance to a higher award once the standard is approved.

Yes, I have seen that many times. Most of the judges I know use the eye color as a deal breaker if two birds are really close. If you have a Cornish, SOME judges will assign much more to the eye color than it is actually worth. I have heard that statement.."if it doesn't have pearl eyes, it is not a Cornish". That is wrong. The Cornish club was going to attempt to change the eye color from pearl to "pearl to yellow" or something like that. The SOP committee is not going to change it because some people can't get pearl eyes. Bob Jones and I have pearl eyes and so do a lot of other people.....and...the SOP has called for pearl eye for many, many years. Why the problem now? Because people in high places can't get pearl eyes. That is no reason to change a long standing description.

Cornish without pearl eyes will win top awards. I don't remember seeing a bird with two different colored eyes, but I am sure they are out there. I have won a class champion with a bird with only part of one wattle. That is because the bird was incredible in every other way and the shrunken wattle was only a couple points. Personally I hated the way it looked and only showed it to fill out a display.

Off to a show for the weekend!

Re: Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!I suggest to all buy or borrow a copy of the SOP, none of the breed club Standards over rule the APA SOP, we can nit pic all we want to but the APA SOP has the only word that matters. Realize when you post a picture the bird may not look as good to some one else. Hey I have got or have had all the faults that are showing up and do not try and cover up the fact.

Don
What is your argument with me exactly

... I am not understanding... I posted a picture regarding eye color.. It is well within the standard.. I don't understand the rest of this rhetoric. Did I somehow contradict the standard here??? If we were posting about combs... The same picture could speak of the wrong color house in the background... I don't get it....still...

OK I want to post some pics of my five month cockerel. I had planned on culling him, but after seeing pics of marans I think maybe I should keep him longer. He came from a pretty dark egg and he is full of vitality. People(not chicken people) are always noticing him from my other birds. I would love a serious critique. I do not want to breed bad examples of the breed. His comb is awful, but he does not have any mossy or white under feathers. He is my biggest cockerel so far. Please let me know what you think. I can handle it.

Conformation: Good..could be heavier built but is young
Slope of back is steeper than I would like but could be used against hens with the opposite problem that is very commn
He has a long covert tail feather that I would not desire
Wattles are nice
Ear coverst are Excellent
Horn color is Excellent
Leg color is Excellent
Melaniser in black is very good
Fethering on leg is not viewable but assume it is there

Overall this bird has more merits than most.

I would strive for stronger leg feathering, no covert, no sprig in comb in the next generation the hen that I would use would be to the redder side with the hackle but not too much green tinge… You have the color banance down. The undercolor is a minor detail and may improve as the bird matures.. This is MY opinion only and others may differ

This is what I was talking about before when I said if we have combs where the Blade has no points it would be much easier to breed a Marans with a five point comb. I would breed this male in a heart beat.

Thank you geebs. I am a newbie at this and if he is a quality bird than I lucked out. He came from an assortment of hatching eggs from gabbard farms. I have heard gabbard farms does not have the best birds. His brother is awful. He has a sprig?

Is that in the back of his comb or are you talking about something else? Thank you Don. I had no idea he would be a good example.
