Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Cockerels and pullets may develop faults after the first year.

Walt
Hi Walt,

Well, as I'm finding with Marans, they can also develop new and ugly things at almost 2 years old too!

I kind of suspected it was because they were "unproven", thanks.

yup...I went up to the hay mount right away last night before I moved the chicks to grab the traps and set them. Then moved everyone. That's pretty funny about your broody ladies!
Yesterday at the sale there were three boxes with broody hens that either had guinea keets or chicks under them and the guy picking up the boxes in the ring to display them got nailed a few times. They were NOT happy ladies!
Now those are some dedicated broodies! Sitting tight and defending their eggs in the middle of an auction, wow. My one Black Silkie gal just flattens out, spreads her wings and growls. Her helpers, on the other hand, were her attack dogs!

Hey! HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!

Maybe that's what Ina was waiting for???
ugh!! That little lady better pop soon....and she better give me more than one baby, otherwise its gonna be a rooooouuuugh delivery with as big as she is. I am ideally hoping for three little teensy ones. I have really small pygmys, so want small babies for her so she has an easier time kidding.

Happy Mother's Day!

chick update- we have 3 chicks left that made it, not sure if they are all pullets yet but at a little over 6 weeks we aren't seeing any comb or wattle development- not sure if they will be delayed a bit do to being so sick. Guess time will tell.

Happy Mother's Day!

Took 5 chooks to the local Exotics Sale yesterday, was quite disappointed not to see them auctioned as I has to leave and play Nurse Ratchet to DH recovering from hernia surgery. I've never run birds through an auction before and planned on going back to see it all happen, but DH snuck out of bed to check on the newly installed bee hive while I was gone and was in bad shape when I got back.

Picked up our 4H pigs last night! DS picked a 90lb pig, it was quite a fiasco moving that thing from the pick up into the pig sty on my own. DD picked a cute little 55 pounder, thank goodness.

Well, I hope they sold well. Nurse Ratchet needs to threaten DH with some serious duct taping if he doesn't behave himself!

Hope he gets to feeling better soon, for both your sakes.

Oh gees, I forgot she was a Pygmy. Hope you get the 3 wee ones! One of my Nubian does had 3 one time, and they were all like 7 lbs. each!

She had a heck of a time with the first one, but the other two flew out. Glad I was there with her to help, she was beside herself when they all tried to nurse!

haha that's some pretty funny imagery there! The first doe I ever had was named Bucket and that crazy pygmy would pop out 4 consistently. I always ended up with the runt to take care of and would try to slip them in my back pack to sneak them to school cause I couldn't bear to be away from them. hahaha And I loved every minute of it!

Men are the WORST patients!

I hatched 9 cuckoos yesterday. 2 splash, 2-3 blue and the rest black. The first 5 I took out 4 had feathered legs. The one Splash in that batch didn't have them.... he is sold now!

At the sale yesterday I came home empty handed

All but a few little roos gone! (I am only keeping a few and some I was not 100% they were roos) All the unwanted EE pullets GONE and some of the babies I hatched this week GONE! And I had fun too! So really right now in all my pens are KEEPERS FINALLY! Hubby was helping me and when he saw how many were going he agreed with me, I don't have too many of my own growing out. I did set a batch of eggs for the next sale in a month.... but they are not having one

I will sell them the old fasioned way.... CL
