It's very interesting reading about the cuckoo's egg color being so much lighter than the others... I have what may be a very silly newbie question.

I have one very nice black (not copper) Marans hen. She has good type, terrific leg feathering and lays about a 6 on the egg color scale. I just hatched out some of DMRippy's eggs, and one of them is a splash cuckoo... if it's a cockerel, would it be worth crossing him with my black hen? And would all the babies be barred? I know sexlinks are made by crossing a solid roo with a barred hen, but I'm not sure what happens the other way around.

I just have to say your chicks are ADORABLE........ I am expecting my chicks to hatch from DMRippy on the 22nd and now I can not wait after looking at your pictures lol. I am hoping for blues

Oh, yeh,,, Does anyone know?????????? do marans take a bit longer or a different technique in the bator?
I have some shipped eggs and 4 are Marans and ....... well ... I expected one or two to at least pip!
(they were set on a saturday and it is Monday..)

I'm giving the little buggers till tomorrow after work.. then I gota clean house and set the Nashville eggs!

what kind of settings have you been using on your incubator, for temp and humidity? Also, what kind of incubator are you using?

The humidity might be causing some complications. This is my 3rd year hatching marans and finally feel like I've got settings that work for both them and ameraucanas. I run my humidity between 20 and 35% for the first 18 days and in the last three days for lockdown run it at 50% and let the chicks pipping naturally raise it to 55% or above, depending on how many are pipping at once.

Did you have any other kinds of eggs in with them, and if you did, did they hatch alright?

It is possible to have Marans hatch late, although I've only had one hatch that way, others I know have had some stragglers, but don't know if they had the bulk of the eggs hatch and then had stragglers, or if the hatch was delayed. Hopefully some of those that have had more experience with the stragglers will be able to chime in for you
