Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

White earlobes.... we saw that at Newnan... remember.... it pops up...you are not the only one.

5 Gal wateres... love them, but they are very heavy and may need some support.  I use the smaller ones in my breeding pens.... 3 gals I think.

Freezing... We used heat tape where we had electricity, the 55 gal barrel was out of the wind and never froze solid.  The nipples did freeze on some and blow out the hole and leaked all the water out of the barrel.  I have not found a GOOD way to keep them from freezing.  We resorted to just removing the nipple wateres in the breeding pens at night and put in  reg water... they can break that some and get some water.  We would then replace them in the morning.  That was easier than THAWING 10 Waterers with 3 Nipples each

Slick.... good luck with your SLW.... I only have a very few growing up and I just love them.  My are hopefully going to be nice quality.  I have a few in the bator now and maybe more coming in a few weeks... we will see..... Now I am on to BLRW too.... so pretty.

Thank you. I'm sure hoping they turn out. I had been seeing that Foley had some good birds and had been winning some shows, so I was able to order directly from them. I'm keeping my Marans, but contemplating whether to try and breed any more. I have some in the incubator now, so I'll have to decide pretty soon.

Quote: I have some that came from Foley birds and some from Paul's in FL.

LADIES! KIM, DEBBI, LENETTE, KATELYN and all the others who've been waiting with me.... I thought I would introduce you to the newest members of the herd! Just gotta interrupt the thread a moment to post photos I've promised!

Here they are at about an hour old, still drying off, but my are they cute and lively! I haven't seen afterbirth yet, so not sure if she's done yet or not. My guess so far is one doeling and one buckling. I believe the little black one in this first photo is the doeling.

my guess on this fluffy is the buckling. Look at those long legs! His papa is a midget pygmy, so I sure hope this little one grows into those stilts! He's got a little half belt on this other side.

up and att'em already eating like pros!

I love this Splash gal.....most of all I love her leg coloring. This is my first Splash to get slate legs this dark. Normally they are way lighter, very pale blue. I know her eyes look very dark in this photo but they are not, they are actually that greenish gray color, so I suspect that they will be the correct color when she matures.

I really really like this pullet. I almost can't wait for her to grow up.
Pretty Pullet. You finally got splash girls!!! Yeah.

Had to go grab some chook feed today, and when I got in there, he still had about 40lbs. of seed potatoes left. I say, "oh still got potatoes??" He asks, "how many do you want?? FREE!" Yippppeeee! Free always works for me, so I left with a Wal-Mart sized bag full! These things are half grown already, and I spent the evening planting them. I hope they do well, potatoes around here are getting ridiculous in price!

Wow what a deal. I never find those kinda deals around here. I decided to start my own sweet potato slips this year and started some growing in water in the window and then of course forgot about them :D So the other day I see something peeking out from behind the curtain way up by the ceiling. I open the curtain and two huge sweet potato plants fall down LOL! OOPS!!
