Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

lol... I am sure it was not intentional. This thread moves fast and posts get missed sometimes.
I don't think solid blue is any more rare than solid black. It is the E/E based solid blue or black that is rare. There are people who sell "solid" blue birds but they are actually blue coppers that have had all the copper bred out of them. It does not change their genes at the e locus though. They are still E^R/E^R (birchen) birds even though you cannot see the copper.. or silver for that matter I suppose.
Thanks, I shouldn't have come off like that, lol. Iv'e got a lot to learn on my birds yet, Iv'e got 9 or 10 varieties, and once they get big enough I'd like to see which breeds I'd like to focus more on breeding, and I'm loving my marans now. You see a lot of adds on CL. And it's interesting to see how many rare breeds people claim to have. I guess it all boils down to me getting to know my birds. Iv'e raised chickens before, but didn't care about the breeds.colors, genetics, etc... Now I'm hooked so to speak

It seems like anyone who advertises on craigslist or ebay...etc always go on and on about how "rare" their birds are. My advice would be to find a reputable breeder if you are looking for more marans. Here is a link to the breeders thread here on BYC https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/613416/2012-marans-breeder-thread
If you are set then join one of the marans clubs online. It is pretty inexpensive and there are yahoo groups that I have found to be very informative. Here is a link to one of the yahoo groups that I visit.. http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/Marans_Chicken_Club/
Well not to mention this thread! There are some really awesome and helpful people who post here.

Thanks, Iv'e got 4 not sure the sex, I bought straight run off a farmer, appreciate the info, and i will check on about getting more.

I believe pure blacks are harder to find than pure blues. In general, the egg color would be lighter than black or blue coppers. It will vary depending on how much work the particular breeder has done with their own birds towards egg color. I think that some that do have pure blues and blacks are keeping them close so they can work on egg color and other traits.

I joined all of the Marans club but they are pretty dead. Hardly anyone talks on them. This and the SOP thread are by far the most active. Even though all of you get sidetracked a lot!

I joined the yahoo group a long time ago and also found it pretty inactive. I belong to several different garden clubs and plant societies etc. while helpful for beginners, there is always seems to be catfighting and they arent as active as the free forums. I have heard similar things about the bird societies and groups as well. In general, I find clubs to be clicky and you can find out the same info for free if you really look or you can just go out and and buy a book. If I want to watch catfighting I can do it free on the free forums or just go out and watch the strays at midnight in the barnyard. There is always someone on those forums who wants to be the boss and exhibits pretty interesting behavior as far as trying to manipulate what members think about other members stock or whatever in order to make themselves look better or alleviate whatever insecurities they have. I can go to work and watch that behavior and get paid for it lol.

Hi and Welcome to the Marans thread! Your Luna gal is a pretty little thing but. I don't think that she is a Marans or if she is she may not be pure Marans. Were you told that she was a specific variety of Marans?
