Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thank you Flgarden!!!! Second round with Giant Pumpkins is going good so far....looks like every seed is cracking. YAY!!!

Here is the other little Splash pullet. Now it may look as though she is clean legged, but she is not. Don't know what happened but she hatched with nicely feathered shanks and now only has stubble. Notice how much lighter and more pale her leg color is in comparison to the other Splash pullet.

Oh and yesterday must have been the preening day around here.....everytime I snapped photos, every bird was either pulling their head back around from preening or preening the wing area or something so if they look a little off....it's because of that.

I have a package at the post office.... is it BLRW or Marans

I joined the yahoo group a long time ago and also found it pretty inactive. I belong to several different garden clubs and plant societies etc. while helpful for beginners,  there is always seems to be catfighting and they arent as active as the free forums. I have heard similar things about the bird societies and groups as well. In general, I find clubs to be clicky and you can find out the same info for free if you really look or you can just go out and and buy a book.  If I want to watch catfighting I can do it free on the free forums or just go out and watch the strays at midnight in the barnyard. There is always someone on those forums who wants to be the boss and exhibits pretty interesting behavior as far as trying to manipulate what members think about other members stock or whatever in order to make themselves look better or alleviate whatever insecurities they have. I can go to work and watch that behavior and get paid for it lol.

Really? The one I linked to is active everyday. Some really interesting and educational topics too. It is free, you don't have to join the club to post there. Bev Davis herself will even answer your question sometimes. I have not seen anything unpleasant yet.
Personally I have seen some unpleasantness on BYC not a few times.
Guess that is just people.
It only costs like $10 to join one of the clubs. I joined the ameraucana club and the marans club. I will renew next year. To each his own I guess, I was just trying to give the other poster some ideas to learn more about marans. It has worked for me.

Here is nosey Nels....thinking I am going to name him that too. Behind him you can see the Splash pullet that I just posted a photo of and her left leg and it's little shank feathering. Wondering why they have to do that......have good stuff on hatch and then lose it or lose it somewhat. Frustrating.

WooooooooHoooooooT! Donna! Let me know how they arrived and how you like them. I was seeing some pretty ratty looking feathers out in the coop yesterday......me thinks I am going to have some molting going on pretty soon. Egg color has also lightened up, but they are still pretty. :)

Totally agree!

Christie~ I belong to both of those groups too. (The Marans groups) I have the notifications sent to my email and everyday I have atleast 10-20 new emails from activity on the group. I read each one but rarely respond to them. I see lots of activity there. I enjoy reading the emails and appreciate all who contribute. I see you are asking some pretty great questions over there and you are getting some great responses. I like to post on BYC and like to read the yahoo postings. I'm funny strange like that. LOL!

Thanks Debbi! I like her tail too. I think she and her sister are going to be good additions to the breeding pen. Here's crossing my fingers that they lay as nice of an egg as they hatched from.
