Dang... she is missing her tag.... I don't know what pen she came from... I suspect my BCM pullets and Pinkchick's Light Blue Roo..... I tossed a few more in the bator yesterday and will hatch all I can from that pen. I get the darkest eggs from them too.

dark eggs! I think he is my best change to get some color in my pullets.

Ok...so I think I have a crazy but really, really good dog! I have broodies in the main part of my barn that have been hatching chicks all weekend. I saw when I did chores that there are at least three. Well...my dog's been fussing his head off for the last 10 minutes and I couldn't figure out why...til I went to the barn and heard a chick fussing his head off. I found him in one of the water pans I use for the free rangers that come and go through the day. To my surprise, he managed to be swimming enough to be keeping his head afloat. Now that I've taken care of the water pan (moving it outside) and returned the dried off baby to its momma, all things are quiet again. My dog's gone back to his house to take a nap. He sure takes care of my birds, including sounding off when he sees hawks.

My chicks always doze off while standing up.  Seems like normal chick behavior.  Chicks dying of course is not normal...  Do they cheep a lot like they are uncomfortable?

On occasion. Wouldn't they huddle together if they were could? Mine don't huddle and mostly stroll around on their own. This is the fourth group I've had in the brooder and the first that try and sleep standing.

Wow.. great dog. Glad he warned you about the chick.

They are pine shaving and I've had four other chicks on them for almost 3 weeks. I've tried raising the temp and they get as far away from the heat source as they can. The 85 seems to be where they're the most comfortable, as they hang out in the middle of the brooder where I check temps. Do you ever have chicks that try and sleep standing up?

I have quite a few that do. I have 2 polish chicks that do it all the time. Funny as hell. They did it since day 1 and they are close to 2 months old now. The problem is if thats all they do. If they are not active, eating and drinking and most of all being chickens than you have a problem!
