Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Quote: I looked it up and didn't really get a good grasp of what it is. Mine didn't stick around, they out grew it mostly by the time I shipped them to the farm. Reg Barring and Cuckoo I would think act the same, but autosomal barring is different some how. You know a little more about genetics than I do so if you look it up, maybe you can explain it to me

I have not run into "autosomal barring". Perhaps someone with more experience in genetics can shed some light on this??

Autosomal Barring is caused by a secondary pattern gene and happens or can happen in birds that may carry Pg & Db genetics.......to my knowledge Marans are not suppose to carry Pg and Db which says to me that these are genetics that are showing up from possible outcrosses to another breed/s somewhere in the past, but I am not an expert this is just what I remember reading along my journey with Marans.
Hoping others that know more about it or if I am wrong come by to correct me and give their opinions and advise. :)

I will have to look it up but if I remember correctly, the barring we usually refer to is on the sex chromosomes; there is another barring gene that is on another chromosome, and is referred to as autosomal chromosomes.

Anyone else have a very toasty humid day? Its been brutal here! I was all gung ho to sort through chicks, but with as hot as it is this weekend, I don't think it would be very good on those little ones, unless I can get up extra early in the morning before it gets too mess with them.

98 here tomorrow. I lost a young pullet this morning, to the heat I think.... moved all those guys back in the shop...now what to do with them more permanently

On the good side, my breeding pens are WELL shaded and it was much cooler back there. That has a good side and bad side. Less sun, more shade.

Next week we HAVE to work on covering the runs out back, it is going to rain for several days and I am just DONE with the wet runs and muddy eggs.... yuck!

I hear ya lady! I have three pens that get muddy every time it rains and it about drives me nuts when it rains! Just have to find some time to do some building.

Quote: We were going to get some of that wavy roofing stuff... but at $13 a sheet and it is very thin really it was going to cost over $300 just for the breeding pens. I was afraid that one branch falling and it would be broken too.... We are going to build some kind of panel and use some 6mil plastic. Hoping that the frame will make it last longer. But at $60 it can be replaced. That is enough to cover it twice if needed too. We also have to build a way to keep it so that there is plenty of ventilation and pitch to the front of the run too.

If anyone has some ideas toss them over here, I can use all the help I can get.
