Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Bev's line is sooo much quicker... I suspect she culled late bloomers.... Is anyone selecting female or males based on featherlinking?

No, I don't think it was a sale, I think she found them under a Bethel bush.

Neither - they were here when we moved in. Came with the place. The Marans and the ghosts. Both have been here for over a hundred years.

But now......if I go and win......at a show like Newnan.....or anywhere in the near future......I don't want to hear a single person say they are someone else's birds.

Hmmm, I am kinda sorta attatched to her. She has always got lots of attention because I felt sorry for her LOL! I don't have the first clue about shipping birds

If you want to know the other BYC member who has one just like her PM me and I will tell you. I know when I spoke to her before, she thought it was an ugly bird. I bet she would for sure sell it to you if she still has it.

I remember the slow feathering thing was bad but I can't remember why either

.....I know egg shape and size is inherited same thing with rate of lay and when they start laying. I'm thinking the late feathering had something to do with moulting...I know in my books a hen that moults in July would be a cull you want your hens to moult in Oct/Nov and you want them to loose all their feathers quickly poor things lose their feathers when it gets cold and wet....and you want to use hens that start back laying the soonest without lights the books say Feb. Most of us only have a few hens trap nesting is the best way to know or use dye my poor husband is going to try making me a trap nest to use in my breeding pen. Wow like geebs said record keeping is so important now we should understand why we can't find many excellent birds most people just want to raise them not "breed" them but they get it mixed up
