Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Oh Goodness, I am not misunderstanding you at all. I guess I am trying to understand what exactly are good triats and bad traits with a BCM roo.

I'm not sure about the wing split. He is such a scardy cat when you go in the run that he just runs and hides behind the girls. I have other pictures I took. I'll have a look at them and see if it appears again.

It was his left wing that concerned me. Sometimes if they have just ruffled their feathers or have been startled, they will catch a feather so it makes it look split. That's why I said, pick him up and fan both wings open. That way, it will be obvious. Also if there is a gap, feel up towards the top of the gap and see if you can see or feel another feather just starting to come in. Glad you didn't think I was tearing him to shreds, I've been out in the sun too much today!

Three week old Marans chicks... would love your opinions on gender!

Blue French Copper (who we of course named Nettie...) with some amazing leg feathering; I'm thinking cockerel:

A French Black Copper I've named Sprigs. Sprigs has pretty sparse leg feathering, and a fairly small comb. I hope pullet! (Sprigs is on the right; he/she was quite surprised by the camera and stood up very tall.) Bad pictures.

French Black Copper with great leg feathering and a smallish comb. I am calling this one Brioche.

And finally, my little Splash Cuckoo who almost didn't make it, who is the biggest ham of all...

Looks like boys to me all 3 have big legs. All 3 are standing tall chest out. That's my call I have been wrong with some late blooming boys or bigger than normal girls.

I love the "tutu" on the little splash,

that is one of the cutest chicken pictures I have seen. I am new to Marans, but loving them. The girls seem to get tail feathers more quickly, so the second one looks girly to me

, but I am not real experienced with sexing them myself, just getting the hang of it.

Today we hatched six blue/blue splash. 3 look splash to me, and 3 look blue. They all came from nice dark eggs, but the three splash were the darkest eggs. I used one of the new babies for my avatar, and will try to post pictures of all later. Happy hatching

I am going to wait for the gender experts.... the cuckoo is a roo I think, no feathers. That first one... looks like he has feather boots on! WOW! I like that look myself!

As for the Marans chicks having issues.... I have never seen it. Mine outgrow the others quickly and I sometimes have to put them with the chicks a couple of weeks older.

I think good high protein feed is the key to healthy chicks.

Hi!

I'm a new Maran owner!
I have 8 new babies. They are all pure french cuckoo marans. She said some are copper and some are black, I got them from a local breeder.
Opinions? Roos, hens, healthy looking? I'm new at the fuzzy footed bird! But I love them!
