Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Keep a roo and a pullet and breed them. Some people have breed them till they breed true. I am not there.... but one day maybe.

Whoa! Has anyone else seen a nose dive in egg color lately?? We have gone from hot and very dry weather, to overnight, wet and cool weather. In the last 2 days, my egg color has dropped, I would say, two color shades!! I also wormed them the day before yesterday with Wazine 17, any correlation in the drop of egg color? I've wormed them with that before, and don't recall this reaction; may be a bit of both conditions??? There were 2 eggs in there today that made me wonder who dropped in a couple of BRs in the middle of the night! Gees!!!
Interesting observation! WHen the weather heats up again, be sure to post the color change if any.

Quote: This is my first year with OE, my FBCM X EE are reasonably dark and they only just started laying. I have 3 OE lines to cross together; and can make a 4 th line with the new FBCM. My plan is to cross OE x OE. I'm ok with a decrease in pigment as the laying cycle progresses as even with a light layer of paint the color is clearly olive.

Bring on the Beefcakes!!

I'm hoping today to get photos. Its actually sunny and NOT windy for the first time in about a week. Yesterday morning when we woke up it was 40*.....and it was June 1st.... what is going on with this weather?! Supposed to hit about 80, so expect some photos (of lots of cockerels

).

Its hopefully also building day!

Oh and the last two batches of chicks (Marans and my few Ameraucanas) to make the voyage to live outside! I can't wait!!

This weather is goofy here too! It is downright cold here this morning! So far, the wind isn't blowing here either. Need to get out to let the chooks out, did not sleep well last night! Got one of those stinking Cluster Headaches from out of the blue. Totally out of season for me, and I escaped many of them with the last season this winter. This one caught me off guard...

Going to a small animal sale tomorrow - can't wait to see how much room I have when I return!!
Clearing out a lot of spare chickens, some bunnies, and a goat!!

Still didn't pick up the breeder pen...SO had to work yesterday...

Debbi - I agree on the broody!

This is the first time I let a broody hatch her eggs and, after a few false starts, she did it!

Little bantam Cochin pullet hen with 3 she hatched, and gave her 5 more that are a week old!

She's very proud! and a great mommy!

awesome about the animal sale! I'll be doing the same on Tuesday and this time I'll have an extra set of hands. Thinking about sending two to my goats here before long, because I think I might be replacing them with ones that have better type!

Hope you can get your breeder pens soon! Just finished chores here, so its off to do some building here in a few minutes. I'm trying so hard to make some progress these days as it helps with stress levels and it is easier to use my time now to build since my dad is not here to take care of. You don't realize how much work caring for someone is til you don't have to do it for a couple of days.
