Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Ok, I'll give it a shot Pink

Bird 1 - too dark an eye, weak coppering in the hackles

Bird 2 - tail set high and loose feathering. too dark in the saddle, no shank feathering, comb

Bird 3 - pretty much the same flaws as bird 2

Bird 4 - dark feathering, long sickle feathers. Man he's a chunker! I think I'd keep this guy if for nothing else but his size! I love his stance and profile! Box him up with Gnarles, please??

Hi Debbi!

I set my Marans eggs the same way I set all others.....I'm not a person who does alot of fussing over them. For the first 18 days I will keep the humidity or try to keep the hum. at around 40%, this can be a challenge here with all of the wetness we have....right now I just peeked in one of them and it says that the hum. is at 50% but it has been pouring here since yesterday morning and very humid outside thus effecting my indoor humidity, I will probably open it up and remove some of the water. Sometimes I can get away with running them with very little water and they still run around 35-38%. Lockdown I up the hum. to around 50-55% and wait. Who ever hatches......hatches! Heck....it's rare if I even candle them.

Thanks Pink,

That's pretty much how mine goes, first 18 days about 45%, lockdown 55-60%. This new bator is very accurate and holds the exact temps and humidity very well. May fluctuate a 10th of a degree and 1 or 2% in humidity, but it always comes right back to the settings quickly. May knock it down 5% and see if that helps any. I don't candle either, can't see squat!

Informational post on something I spotted in My Marans, Black Copper have nice wide back at the shoulders and tappers all the way to the tail where the tail feathers come from. My Wheaten Marans are wide at the shoulders and stay wide mostly all the way to the tail starting point. The Wheatens have a nice small rounded tail with the males having a nice rounded open tail. The Black Copper have more of a V shape tail and is not rounded or open causing lots to have a pinched tail. I surmise that the width of back near the tail starting point has something to do with the pinched Tail. This is just my Marans so not looking for a debate.
