Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Quote: We only had ONE very excetpional farrier in this area. Worked with all the vets, esp TUFTS. His son, well he was pretty good, could have been much better given he had access to the best.

So don't let the farrier put you off if the vet is very hopeful. Most farriers are mediocre at best. HE just needs to do as the vet directs.

Good luck tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry you lost a buddy.

i have what I think are 6 of the loveliest friendly Black Copper Marans... too bad 3 are Roos and one of the Roos has a gimped neck. I am going to look for homes for 2 Roos. Anyway, when can I expect the girls to start laying? I ask mostly because they are the first to occupy our new coop and to prevent sleeping in the nest boxes I haven't put any nesting material in yet. Thanks a bunch!

In thinking about it - I bet, with some special training and a very special dog, they could find you one to alert high blood sugar, just like they have dogs that will alert a seizure before it strikes!
I guess it all comes down to the chemicals released and the scent that results!
HI,
Might also try Southeastern Guide Dogs For the Blind in FL. They have several breeds available. Used to have smooth collies, perhaps they still do.
Also Canine Companions for Independence ( centers all over the US). They train a great variety of asistance dogs and might be a good bet for a dog trained for multiple tasks. All have websites including NEADS.
Best,
Karen

Another hot day for us here in southern NEwEngland. Really worried about the birds. Yesterday they were panting, wings out for a few. Two kiddie pools always full ( got ducks) and water every where for each little flock in their own space. Its supposed to be hotter today.

Even I was starting to develop a headache, I drank more water and took a tylenol. HOw do I do the same for the chickens?

I did notice the AMeraucanas and EE hens disappeared, hopefully into the cooler woods. Please let the breezes increase.

THe warning call went up while I"m putting out extra waters. My boys report in. A turkeyis in the dead pine!! My breeder turkeys are penned directly below. What a sight, again. We haven't had turkeys here for years, and this hen seems to be th only visitor. I'm sure she didn't feel welcome when she hopped to another branch and it broke under her weight--I felt like a bad hostess!!

Marans and all kept up the warning call long after she disappeared into the woods. Hope these marsh birds can take the heat!

) (I just can't seem to get rid of my extra cockerels right now......come next weekend I hope to return very empty handed after going to the bird auction...keep your fingers crossed) anyway, he has purple sheen and green sheen. The purple sheen is gorgeous. I have been doing some reading regarding the purple and green and the information I am able to find is good stuff. Thanks again for sharing that.

Debbi~ I will find out about the bird auction next weekend as that is when we plan to go. I sure hope I can off load all these extra birds. I have come to really like keeping my numbers to 30 adult birds instead of 150+. Much easier.
