Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just checked the weather forecast for today, and they say it's only supposed to get to 89*!! That's going to feel like heaven compared to the last few days! Chooks will be frisky today!! But sigh, tomorrow back up to 101*, but possible storms this weekend! I don't dare mow my grass here, it would be like mowing the gravel driveway, it is so brown and crunchy. But, it's mostly fescue and red clover, it'll come back.

Lenette ~ You still above water down there??

well...its lowered a bit in temps here too....looks like 92 is what they are shooting for, but right now its downright heavenly...its 68 and breezy! Kind of wondering if it might not stay a bit cooler!

Gooood morning Marans people!

Welcome to the newcomers!

ChickenExtreme ~ You did right to walk away from those birds! If that guy has been breeding them for that long, he should know that Marans should have a 5 point, single comb! There are other problems with combs in the breed as well, such as side sprigs, and Carnation combs. Check any combs well on the parent birds, if possible, to see if they have these problems. You can go back through this thread to see pics of sprigs and Carnation combs. We love pics here, so post some of your birds too. This breed is very chanllenging to get correct, but hang in there, they are worth the effort!
Thanks, when I asked to see the parents, he hesitated and got on another subject, that made him a little sketchy too, lol. As soon as I can I will post pics

Yeah, that would be the first red flag for me. Hey, did that bear in your avatar think he was deer hunting? I would've fainted dead away, bears are my worst nightmare!

Already 85 this morning and headed to 102. You guys must be soaking the cool front up! Our weather guys said it'll weaken for us. I'd hate to see what it would be without it down here.:barnie

yikes....no fun! I am indeed soaking it up. All the animals seem to be relishing it as well....lounging around and in particular the chickens seem soooo relaxed. Hope it stays a bit cooler today so I can take birds to the sale and hopefully will mean larger crowds!

Yes, the breeze here is coming out of the ENE, bringing in some cool. It's only 68 here so far, and everyone is relishing it! Now, if we could just get a rain in here... Hey, good luck at the sale Vicki! How's the foot doing this morning?

55 deg and raining here in Vermont. Put eggs into lockdown last night, eve of day 17, this morning I have a pip. Silly Marans eggs want to hatch sooo early!

If it stays under what they said it was supposed to be, you can bet I'll be heading over to the sale. Gotta thin out some of these younguns and a few more pullets I held over, but now are not stacking up against some of the ones I've got growing out now....so maybe another 30 to 40 birds including chicks will go.

The foot is doing great, I soaked it for a long time last night and was able to see better after I cleaned it up and looks like it should heal quickly. Using padded bandages and can't even feel it this morning, when I'm up and walking around. So think I lucked out, could have been sooo much worse.

Wow Keara, I am jealous on both counts! Blow some of that rain out here, will ya? As for the Marans, I have never had one hatch before day 21, and some have hatched at day 25! I've even started lockdown at day 19 instead of 18, so they don't get all the extra humidity and drown.
