Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Congrats on your hatches Keara and Hens! Can't wait to see them.

DesertMarcy~ I was thinking......with 17 roos to look at...maybe it would be easier if you posted 1 each day to look over. Less stress for you and gives us new pics to look at everyday. :)

Wynette~ Why does BYC log me out everytime I change pages or try to post something? It's been very frustrating lately. Ok..done whinning about it now. :)

Can anyone tell me what you get if you cross a cukoo maran with a Black Copper maran?

Is that a splash?

I mean it is a maran but does it have an existing name or just a mutt maran?

Speculating here -- cuckoo/barred is dominant so good chance you will get cuckoo birds. Depending on how much copper your birds tend to throw, they may or may not have too much red to be good cuckoos. If you want cuckoo, cuckoo male over black female is your best bet. Cuckoo female, BCM male, a lot less cuckoo. Cuckoo is cuckoo. If it shows, your bird is, technically, cuckoo.

(Splash is two copies of the blue gene. Not a possibility from the combination you are proposing.)

I've not heard of that issue - put a post in this section...if you're experiencing the issue, chances are that others are as well: https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/3/byc-website-forum-feedback-announcements

Quote: I have some of Donnas blue cuckoos. She has some conern about gold leakage as you might remember. Could there be BCM lurking way back when to cause this, or something else?

I guess I would need to understand how blue marans is like and unlike BCM genetically. Or what they should be. LOL

This is an open question if anyone wants a shot at it.

If I recall correctly, blue acts as a "bleacher" of sorts (diluter) with other colors, so that could be where the gold leakage is coming from in your blue cuckoo....correct me if I'm wrong, genetics experts!

Wynette, full cuckoo could have been masking the lurking gold, and the blue diluter revealed it's presences, almost wrote "presents". Color genetics is very confusing because I"m left wondering what that gene is and how to remove it if that's what I want to do. May need more blue cuckoo to work with!!

Thanks for all the replies!! I have a BCM girl and a friend is getting rid of a Cukoo roo so.... Was just wondering. I have read that the egg from the off spring will be lighter if I go that route.

pinkchick, you are a genius! I have so been wanting to get out and take pics, but it is hot hot hot here and all the birds are hiding out trying to keep cool. So I think you have come up with a great idea. I actually have 17 pullets, they don't look all that much different from each other, it is the cockerels I'm fussing over--there are 11 of them. Yes, now with a plan to just do a few at a time, that is much less stressful and easier! Pics to follow!!
