Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

This is one of our splash hens. She is one of only three that exhibit red/copper.
We have an all splash pen and we are currently working to make it two. One with red/copper one without. Can you explaing why the red/copper is so prevelant in the roosters and so uncommon in the hens? Something more than just it is sex linked.

I'm hoping for 66 as the low TONIGHT! haha
Sheesh, a high of 66* is March here!

Right now, at 9:30pm, it's 80*. Sure wish we'd get that for a high for at least a few days??

Isn't he FABULOUS! VERY light blue (what I'm after) with FABULOUS feathered legs and a clean middle toe. My cup TRULY runneth over ....

The egg he hatched out of (Ann's - a Black Copper Marans)

Just a glimpse of those fabulously feathered legs .... (feathered shanks are an issue with my Blue Coppers so far. This little one gives me TREMENDOUS hope!)

Congrats!!

Sorry, no he is not, he just has what some call a blended Copper color. When you go out to the barn if you use Wheat Straw that is what is referred to as straw colored. Entirely too much energy is being wasted on the Black Copper young male. The only male I have seen looking better is the Black Copper males Vicki is hoarding in Nebraska. Hi Vicki.
well shoot! thank ya! I'm blushing again! I have some boys filling out from my second hatch I was just looking at earlier today that I'm hoping I can find time to get update shots on. These are all from my alternative roo. The one I'm growing out for dinner that has the lazy comb is killing me...as he's the most gorgeous one of them and the first one I see...seems like it goes that way sometimes

I have no idea. I don't think I've ever seen a Splash hen with the copper? I will leave that to someone else that has bred far more than me, I only have one Splash pullet, and she has no copper.

What color(s) were this gal's parents?

OK since the splash thing has popped back up..... Those of you that have or want a splash pen or two..... how are you going to keep the color in the splash? I know it washes out after a few generations.... like 2. Are you going to put blues in the pens or blacks or both? My guess would be blue to get as many splashes as you can. Splash was important to me with my first Marans as I wanted Blues. Now I am thinking I need some splash for uses like Vicki and Kim said. Maybe in the fall I will have a BLUE pen and get me some
