Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Barb, Congrats! Let her sit another few days. My Silkies all hatched in about a week's time! Some I thought might be duds were brought inside and candled, then I put them in the bator and they hatched!

Debbi~ So sorry. HUGS to you! I don't know what would have caused that. I hope someone comes by and gives advise.

Didn't you just go through the modem thing not too long ago? I hope you get back up soon.

Thanks for the encouragement! I'll keep my hens and be on the lookout for a good rooster that will better my program, but for the moment I'll set the project aside and concentrate on my Silver Laced Wyandottes. I was able to buy good foundation stock and they sorta have my attention at the moment. Also, my wife is enjoying the SLW's along with me where she didn't the Marans. That means a lot to me right now. I won't be giving up on the Marans.

Thanks Kim. Yes, this will be my SIXTH modem to fail! All are guaranteed for a year, and I have yet to have one make it that long! I am so POed with this company's crap products! On top of that, it is about a 2 week turn around for them to get me another one, either that or drive 60 mile round trip, and pay $50.00 for a new one.

Need to find another brand that is better and cheaper! These external modems are the pits! I so want to get satellite now!

I do think I have some good birds, I"m just too chicken, pun intended to post them. SO I lurk and go look at my birds. THe marans has soooo many features that need work. I have other birds I njoy, but don't choose to improve them much, maybe because older breed and more etablished. IDK. OE and EE are very easy! LOL

Naima left the eggs so I cracked one open - clear - went through them all - 4 clear, 1 early to mid-term quitter so 3 is our final number. Naima is in FULL mother mode now.

I'm definitely learning. Eggs from my home-grown not so classy stock hatch EVERY time, every single one. (Plus side, they lay HUGE, dark eggs. Consistantly. The culls are big and meaty.) Those more persnickety, high-class eggs (well bred Marans) - the only one that developed and hatched was laid minutes before I put it under the broody so I've got more ideas to try now like not storing the eggs at all. Get them incubating right away. If my suspicions about the broody contagion in my coop are correct, I might be able to experiment a little.

Had to come in here to cry my woes. I lost Lazer, the Showgirl this morning. Everyone was fine at 7:30pm last night when I fed and watered for bedtime. This morning I go out, and I see red! Blood on those white Silkie feathers is quite vivid. He had a prolapse, but didn't seem like any of the others had been pecking yet, so I had hopes and brought him in. He was in a lot of pain, and I was desperately trying to find answers on here for the situation. In the mean time, he passed away.

Could the heat have caused this problem? He is not of breeding age yet, so that's not it, I just saw no cause for it. He was fine, and running around last evening with a piece of squash that they all love. My only SG, gone...I am bummed, he was so sweet. To make matters worse, my modem is going out, so I may not be on here again for awhile. Sheesh, when it rains...

TOTAL bummer, Debbi.

Me thinks we will go fishing again this evening and try to beat our neighbor to the hotspot.

At first I only got into Marans for the eggs as well, then I fell in love with them for their beauty and sweet dispositions. I was hooked. No fishing punn intended.

I like the temperament on the boys too!! I know I don't have to worry about my children.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one having issues with lavender Ameraucanas!!! Totally not Marans related but - do you find you have the same problems when you cross the lavs back to an unrelated black? I'm really hoping that will improve things for me.

(I have issues with some of my Marans too ....working on that too!)

So sorry.... He was so ugly he was cute... Made me consider SG instead of Silkie for the little girl's pet.
Thank you for posting his photo

No idea what would cause that, but.... it happened and there is nothing that can be done now.
Sorry for the loss
Patricia
