Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Guess the gender... roo or pullet!?!? This black copper marans has me wondering. I am leaning towards roo..... but he lacks a comb. Looks nothing like the other roos in the bunch born the same day. Thoughts please

They are about 6 weeks old now. Feathering on this one was slower- like the blue copper roo.

Next to a blue copper marans.... notice how much more the blue is developed in the comb?

Blue pullet in the same bunch

Other black copper roo

What do you all think?? Thanks!!!

I am leaning to roo myself. He is slow feathering too. I bet that comb catches up to the waddles soon.

Debbi~ Yes, Jane is very small...I love it! Can't wait to have more someday. Yes I will milk Loosey after she is done with Jane. Nigerians are good little milkers..and besides I can try out my hand at some cheese.

What's Olivia up too?

Darryl is sitting hard at it.....sitting on nothing but she is determined. I haven't gotten around to moving her and putting any eggs under her yet. Also have a broody Welsummer hen.

That silly girl Olivia. I snagged her last night and put her in the run, and did not let her out this morning. She whined and whined, but then headed to the coop, so maybe she will get the hint to lay in there?? Stupid egg sucking cats were snagging the eggs right out from under her! All she was sitting on were broken egg shells. At least in the coop or run, I can cordon off an area for her, and it won't be that much extra work for me toting food and water. She is NOT a happy camper today though...

Those Nigerians are sure cute, but I can't see me having much luck milking them. I had dual carpal tunnel surgery some years ago, so gripping small things, like those teats must be, would be very hard on my hands. Maybe a mini milk goat will be the way for me to go, either that or another Nubian. There is a place to the north of me that sells Nigerian mixes, may have to go check them out. She is a tad pricey I'm thinking, but maybe I can trade her some chickens for goats? Just what I need about now..

How about a LaMancha goat? Lots of good milk and they are a larger goat.

That comb almost looks like a pea comb in that shot. Do you have a front on shot of it?

Didn't get to post pics yesterday, so I will post 2 cockerels today, in separate posts. This is black copper Marans cockerel #14. Unfortunately, no tail to evaluate (again!). I just don't know what I'm going to do with all these males--not many of them look to be obvious culls to me.

Here he is the one on the right:

his back seems kind of off without the tail, from what I can see his comb looks pretty good.

Here is BCM cockerel #7. He looks to me to have a few too many points on his comb. Does anybody see a thumbprint comb on him? A bit of white on the wing feathers still. He is still young. Comments?
