Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Quote: IDK what his set up was, but it really did come a hard rain last night. The creek was up several feet and flowing pretty fast. I had an empty plastic tote, the really big ones, not near a tree or roof and it had 4.5 - 5 inches of water so did the wheel barrel. I think it came down really quick too. He said he had wood around the bottom and it may have acted like a dam... but with that much water they just couldn't do anything. Most were only a few weeks old maybe 4-5 so still little.

I will get pic as soon as I get them.

Gees, who lets 3 day old chicks out free?? It amazes me how moronic some people can be. A lady that came here to get some chicks was told to make sure she immediately and physically showed the chicks the water and food when she got them home. I told her to hold them and dunk their beaks in the water a few times so they know what it is. She asked, "don't you feed them water??" Well of course I do. "Then why do I need to show them the water?" I had to chuckle and told her, "well, say you were in a strange town, and went to a strange restaraunt, and found you needed the bathroom quickly. Would you go looking for it yourself chancing an accident, or would you ask someone where the restroom was??" Ahhhhhh, ok now I get it...sheesh.

Poor analogy I know, but she was a blonde, so it evidently clicked? No offense to the blondes out here!!

If that was about my post.... sorry, I left the word MONTHS off... they were 2-3 MONTHS old. But I would think you need to keep them penned up for a week or so till they knew where home was. I would not let new chickens jut get out and find there way.

Well now that I have read all of BYC.... off to read my new SOP! I got it today in the mail..... I can't believe I have not opened it yet.

BTW Pink.... I like your roo a lot!

Candled some eggs tonight (day 7) Couldn't see life in the 6 out of 14 under Mother Hen that we checked. It is cold tonight and didn't want to cool the eggs too much. Hoping that us newbies who have never attempted to look inside a marans egg are just not seeing what we need to lol. We could see the yolks for the most part- but could not determine life in them. One seemed more filled then the rest, but air sacs were not really visible. We are just going to give it more time and check again sometime next week.

I don't toss any eggs till day 14. If they are clear they go at day 14.

I just did a 14 day candle on my Marans that might be drown, about 1/2 were clear. I saw no life in any Marans eggs, no movement anyway. My wheatens seem to be fine. I didn't toss any wheaten eggs. The marans were collected during the heat so that may have had something to do with it. Lets just see what hatches

I just received an SOP lately. Does anyone know why Marans are not in there? I read somewhere that they were accepted but I don't see them. Maybe they were accepted after the last printing?

I think I just bought one and will now will have to get another one after the next printing. Rats!!!
