Well Debbi, In true midwest extreme fashion, the weather is following suit. We have just been placed in a severe thunderstorm warning til midnight tonight. I'm praying we get some good rain, but none of the insane stuff.

Well I'll hold you in my prayers tonight, you really don't need that right now, nor do I! The old saying, "Come hell or high water" , keeps coming to mind. I'd give anything for the high water right about now, we've already been through hell! But yes Lord, hold the tornadoes, please!

Debbi, the scary thing is... I actually had someone tell me that they'd heard that things would not cool off here, at all, until October...

As I'm typing this, I heard an unfamiliar sound outside and the chickens started raising a fuss, guess we've all forgotten what big fat raindrops hitting the ground sound like. Alas, the sun is still shining and the tiny little cloud those drops fell out of is already gone, and the little wet splats are already evaporated. What a tease!

Well at least you got some splats! Nothing herre yet, and the sun is out in full force still. Dawned on me that my young Silkies who are now about 3 1/2 months old, have yet to see a good rain!! Good thing I've been spraying them all with the hose! Now if this weather wants to hold over the winter, with intermittent rains in between, I would not mind so much. My fear is we are going to have an unGodly winter because of all of this, PLUS the exorbitent feed prices! Hang onto your hats folks, it's going to be a bumpy ride!

Yeah, no tornadoes is about right. I think this has been one of the most stressful years of my life...in pretty much every way.

Well so far I have 5 Blue Coppers 1 Black copper (one blue has a very brown head.... I think it is a roo but will keep an eye on it) 4 wheaten Ams and 1 Lavender Am. So 11 in all not bad for a lost hatch, I thought anyway. They may not be done yet. I think almost half hatched maybe a little less.

Debbi, I remember my mother telling me that they would get a big block of ice and put it in front of the fans to be air conditioning of sorts.

Love that idea of blocks of ice in front of the fan--i would use soda bottles of ice.

but, you're SO right about the livestock forgetting how it is to have rain - my Guineas screamed their fool heads off during and after a huge rain storm!
Of course they do that when it snows on clean ground, too! Any change throws them off!

It wasn't all that long ago. My Grandmother kept her icebox up until the late 50s. Even though she had a new fangled refridgerator, she preferred the ice box. The new fangled thing froze up all the time, and leaked onto the floor. So I can remember the ice man, the coal man, and the milk man! Oh yes, and the rag man! They used to come by once a month to pick up your old rags and other junk you may have lying around! Then in the 60s, it was the Fuller Brush Man!

That's how dad met mom. He was their "ice man". And that's why I look like I do. LOL

Just popping in to ask my question again because their are so many posts on this thread I lose track: (newbie I be)

Q: What are the best qualities of a BCM rooster? (I have one and he is now 6 mos. Looks a bit 'caricature-like', cartoonish in appearance. He is really "upright." Is this awkward stage adolescence or just his own appearance?

I have tried and tried to get a good pic from him. He just won't be still long enough. Will keep working at it. Or should I wait till he' a bit older?

Oh,one more question: the chicken-farmer worker at the co-op today told me that there is one very good hatchery for ordering special breed birds.... and that they are radical in keeping the undesirable qualities 'absent '. It's called "Sandhill Preservation Center" , specializing in rarer birds.

Q: Any opinions?
