Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I soaked it in warm water, dried it and put neosporin cream on it.  He like the process.  One Marans owner said this is a normal occurance when bloodfeathers get plucked out.  (I wonder by whom, though) and that I should monitor it. If it swells I need to pluck the feather nubs, squeeze out any pus and then treat it like one would Bumblefoot. So now I have to read some more.
Thanks for your input.  If it is not infected, it is most certainly inflamed and vulnerable.

Wonder if Epsom salt in a warm water bath would help with reducing the redness? If you do see him or others trying to pull the feathers out maye some blue coat would help, that way the redness isn't showing. Hope he heals fast for you.

Hey, thank-you. I actually did soak both his feet in Epsom salts earlier this morning, probably while you were posting this! I checked the other foot too, under his feathers and found a similar situation, only with some pus swelling, so I squeezed that out and got rid of some feather nubs, then put lots of neosporin (without the "caine" pain killer) I have Bag Balm and Blue Kote on my list for going to town today. He likes he soaking but got a little impatient with the rest of it. I know now that with a feather-footed one I need to keep a particularly close eye. Thanks for your input.

LOVING the information on Self Sufficiency! Although I hope I don't brine my culls in Epson Salt! Got those two conversations mixed up for a second!

Soooo....here is my only boy (although I have eggs in the bator, lets hope they hatch!). My question is... does he have too much color in his hackles and is therefore actually a Wheaton? Can i work with this, or should I start all over with a better line? The judge at the 4H fair thought he had good type, but said he didn't have much knowledge of Marans and didn't know that they were admitted into the Standard. I thought I brought my Marans Standard print out with me (as per suggested on this thread, Thank You!) and he offered to look over my paperwork, but it couldn't be found when it was our turn to talk with the judge.

I think he has a good tail set and a nice comb. This picture is mostly to show his hackle color. What do you all think?

Hope you have good luck with getting it healed, he could be the one pulling out the feathers as it is bothering him. Don't know if a dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide would help with the area too.

The amount of color in his hackle IMO is great.
I don't believe there is a correlation between the amount of color a bird has and being Wheaten. Wheaten characteristics and influences, if hiding in a bird usually tends to show small indicators sometimes as early as hatch or when they start to feather out, or as they are maturing.
This bird does not look like he has any Wheaten characteristics to me.

Wynette, posted an email from Dr. Fulton here at Michigan State Universiy and he explained what this is called.. I would give a shot of LA200 or Combiotic to get rid of the infection.

I believe when they say too much color they are talking about hte blended Hackle feathers and this should not be bred into them if you have nything else to use. I would worry more about all the white in the tail section, now this is a problem.

Yikes. I was a nurse but I've never given a chicken a shot before. When you say combiotic do you mean a wide-spectrum antibiotic? Where's teh best place to give a shot. What guage and what dose?

A couple of contributors have said this is a normal occurance with feather-footeds. I tooked a good look at the other one today too, when I was soaking his feet. It did not look infected but ended up squeezing some pus out from where the little feathers grew (that he had also broken off there, too.) So if they break off bloodfeathers infection gets a point of entry? Buff Orps are easier. :)
