I think with all Marans the color just varies. I like the darker Copper, like Vicki breeds too. But I am not there. This year putting color in the pullets has been HUGE. My original Marans hens were pretty much solid black. I used a lighter Blue Copper like that one and now I have copper in the hackles. I am seeing I need two lines, a pullet line and a roo line.

Okeedokes ... I hope this is my last question before I retire back to 'reading' for a while. I got my very first marans chicks from a local backyard breeder and I thought the formidable "Donald" (shown below) was a Blue Wheaten, am I correct in thinking this (He is 81/2 weeks) .............. oh please excuse the blurry photies, these I took for my record keeping .... noting the blue downy feathers, I thought he may be a Blue Wheaten???

IDK... He has some brown in his wing tip which would be a wheaten thing....I am not sure if he is blue, I can see the lighter fluff that would make you think blue, I don't know anything about wheaten Marans. I could barely tell my Wheaten Am was blue, took a splash chick to convince me. Your guy sure looks BLACK to me, but the fluff...

If no one else chimes in there is a Wheaten Marans thread too.

Is this that boy I liked so much? If so, did he get any more of that off coloring?

This is the boy :) Seems to have lost the small amount of gold that used to be on his wings..... at least from what I can tell from the pictures.. still very young too.

Before - this is what he looked like when he left. This is when we noticed a small patch of dark brown on his wings.

After

Oh, and I showed my husband these pictures- he was a little perturbed at me LOL! He's like- " and why didn't we keep him??? He is an awesome looking bird!" And I then had to remind him that we wanted to do blue coppers.... remember? the bluuuuues! remember "washington's" (yes, pink's) blue copper boys?"

my dark blue and black chicks of this age (not wheatens...) are hard to tell apart sometimes. The light has to hit them just right.
