Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

well, next time around Dh is going to have to do something different. I am shooting for the 6 times a day turning that the regular egg turners do , BUT OMG - - it is an obnoxious pain in the rear !

So, Dh but a little bitty fan in the cooler / incubator. It makes a humming noise because it is sitting on the wire rack. Do you think my chicks will come out of the shell a nervous wreck due to the constant noise. ? ? ?

I so agree with Debbi Lisa. My first incubator had no turner either......what a bummer. I can in no way be trusted to do those poor eggs justice. That incubator in now wrapped in black plastic & stored & I bought one with a turner......................Ahhhhhhhhhhhh so much better.

I'm just going to jump right in on the middle of the conversation.

You know that incubator that you have stored would be probably work well as a hatcher if you ever needed to seperate breeds or something like that.
A person can never have too many incubators around.

No, they will be fine.
You should hear the noise my home'mater makes, if'n any chicks were to come out a nervous wreck it would be mine.

Thank you geebs! I hope she is enjoyed as I am sure she will be. You should have seen Lensters holding her and putting her to sleep while I was getting the box ready for her. It was too cute!

Now you see why Dh has ALWAYS sent me to bed when I get tired ! We have been married for almost 25 years now - - that's is a long time to be sent to bed for being grumpy when tired !

of you love me . . . .
does that mean the rest of you don't do any special packaging of your hatching eggs.

How do you track which chick came from which egg ? ? Or do you only hatch one hen's eggs at a time ? ?

Math~

I have a huge bator (the home'mater) that I can divide into several compartments for keeping babies seperated. I carry around a pencil and mark each egg while I am in that specific coop before moving on to the next, if I didn't they would be mixed up before I even got them into the house. I will incubate them all together but on lock down day I will move them (seperate breeds) into the big bator into the previously divided areas. I need to get it up and running this week as I will be having babies this weekend. Will try to post a photo for ya when they are in lockdown and divided.

Am I talking to myself in here this morning or what?

I finally got a nice photo of my solid blue pullet. She is such a busy body and always on the go it is hard to get a close up photo of her.
She needs a name any suggestions?

Good morning all! I woke up late this morning, due to being up most of the night. Coyote packs were moving through the area, and they were quite vocal!

Of course, that kept setting off my male Shepherd, so I was up and down all night. Got out to the coop with some trepidation, opened the pop door and out comes the crew. Went around to the big door to check on Pip, after his first night with the "big chicks". He looked no worse for wear, and was sitting in a big pile of shavings. Funny thing is, neither of the roos crowed this morning! Later, I will put Pip out in the pen within the run and see how the big ones act towards him today. I'm thinking about 2 weeks (hopefully!) of him being penned up in the coop with them, and they should accept him into the flock.
