Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Just a quick question, are all marans eggs the same color? i mean like do different color birds lay different color eggs? i bought some hatching eggs and two different color marans were included and one egg is MUCH lighter than the other. is it supposed to be that way?

Hi AnimalLover99
The short answer to your question is no, Marans eggs between different color varieties are not all the same color. Even eggs between the same variety (say BC) are even different colors and even the same hen will lay different hues within a season, the beginning of the season is usually darker. If you do a search on BYC or Google Marans egg color you will find the Marans egg color scale to see the different colors. I hope this helps!

Post the picture, Patricia. None of my blues are showing white underfluff. Would like to know if what you are seeing is just light blue or truly white. (By any chance, is this one of the birds you are planning to bring to Woodstock? It is SO much more meaningful to discuss the birds in the flesh. Plus, we might be able to pin down one of the judges after judging and ask them for their opinion. There are some quality judges booked for this show so we should get some very useful guidance - if we can corner them!)
Yup, she is coming to woodstock with me... we have to get together and chat.
Thanks
Patricia

Good morning, everyone! HI, ROGER!!!

GREAT to see you here! We've all missed you!

For anyone who has not heard, the videotape of the judging demonstration that Walt will be doing on a Marans did not take place a few weeks ago, but Peter Ovalle and Walt did get together and decide on a show in December that they'll be doing it. So, hang tight for the video!

In regard to the question Roger posted about anyone having the white tail feathers WITHOUT the white underhackle - yes, I had two of them. Both Cottage Hill males, both overmelanized, nice specimens otherwise. Here is one when he was younger, before the white tail feathers showed themselves:

I do not think the White under hackle and the white in wing and tail are connected. I think the tail coverts might be in the same group with the White in wing and tail.

This is not to say the white under Hackle and the white in Wing and Tail will not show up at the same time though. I have never seen the white anywhere except in males with the very light legs. Never in a male with medium to dark slate legs. When I culled for this it was virtually gone after two breedings. Most BC there will be lots of culling to start with. After two year I only had like 10-15 out of over three hundred young males.

There is more than one Gene causing this problem. Start keeping records and culling very deep if you are breeding to the SOP. If you are not breeding to the SOP you have nothing to worry about.
