Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Don, why not post this in the forum so ANYONE who has the black copper & blue copper birds can know your advice? I guess I don't understand the need to be so secretive. Please do share what you believe to be the best way to go about this. (I do not have anything other than Black Copper, but I am definitely interested in hearing, as this could benefit other breeds as well.)

I do know that Don really doesn't like confrontation. He doesn't try to start arguments and he doesn't enjoy participating in them. He has his beliefs and states them simply.

He wants to help others, not start heated debates. Hence, he does help folks via email. I am positive that he would share his advice via email to anyone who contacts him.
Normally, if he says he will share something via email it is because he wants to avoid additional hostilities from other posters.

Here are the eggs I am getting from my oldest Splash Copper hen, Darryl. Much to my disappointment the other 2 splash girls have not started laying yet, I so can't wait to see their eggs.

NICE.... and from a SPLASH... REALLY NICE!

As would I, Don. I don't know of anyone that is breeding for the preferred round shape specifically - I think we probably have many other things that folks are working toward now. That said IF I had a hen that laid them (and I don't), I'd track her offspring, to be sure, to see if it passed down!

Wynette, Just wandering if anyone with Marans is working on getting a flock that lays the spherical egg? I myself would like to have some of the round egg layers.

One of my big blue coppers lays a beautiful dark brown spherical egg. In fact, I candled her egg last night to see where the air cell was, it is that round, and it is a jumbo sized egg. However, she is clean legged so I have to cross her judiciously. But I have plans for her this winter and will see what comes of it. (Very nice, big, black copper cock, out of a dark very nicely shaped egg. Feathered shanks LIKE mad. White feathers under the hackle and he's over-melanized as is she but I'm trying the pairing anyway.)

Wynette, the person that started the Dark egg thread had BC that layed the spherical eggs.

Everything I have read says the Spherical egg will be forward if we breed for it, also says the spherical egg should be darker since it takes longer to travel through the duct.

Barb, I had to laugh when I read the post with all the faults. I applaud you for making the mating , then you will idea of what to expect in the future. I have always made test matings will all the breeds. I have done feed experiments also trying to determine what works best.
