Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Thanks Barngoddess for reposting that. I did read that awhile back, but when hatching it makes no sense. With only one bird being lightly feathered how do I get one with great feathering? Genetics just hide so much... they carry it but don't express it.

I expected about 1/2 with light feathered legs... but that is not what I am getting. I am getting feathering from very very light to HEAVY. Just seem odd. Oh well... I need the feathered legs so I will take it.

On a brighter note.... I got the DARKEST EGG I have EVER GOTTEN today

gonna hatch that puppy!

Show us the egg!!!!!!
What makes you think I too a picture????? This is with a flash. The egg in the middle is a nice light blue not quite that pale.

My nephew came by and I had the eggs sitting in a chair and he said "Whats up with the CHOCOLATE EGGS"

I think the dark eggs I got from you were dark. I can't wait to hatch them. They are settling in and will go in the incubator Saturday night.

can I get an opinion on our prospective new flock roo? Mufasa is the only black roo that we hatched this year although we hatched and hatched under broodies all season. Our current roo is blue copper so we know Mufasa has blue genetics, but we plan to concentrate on blacks and needed a black roo.
Any comments welcome.

We have been having a heck of a time with a small hawk grabbing the smaller chickens and even 2 guineas. Mufasa and his 5 ladies are enclosed on all sides and top for protection, but i worry that they are not getting free range experience. Just can't risk losing him at this point.

Hi All. Just got back home from a trip to the Boston Poultry Expo in North Oxford MA. It was the first show I had been to (just to look) and it was interesting. There were probably 7-8 marans there...... I was very surprised to see how much the birds did not follow the SOP..... We talked with him for a minute and he made it clear that he was there to judge what was there- didn't mean that they were good quality. I guess I thought that birds that go to shows must be show worthy. Guess I have a thing or two to learn lol but I will say that Blue Langshan's in person are stunning.......

So THAT is where the Blue Langshans are hiding....! Just got home from a show in Maryland, a Langshans Meet and we were commenting on all the Black Langshans and wondering where the blues were.

I entered my White Marans Pullet, just for fun. She's not even reached POL and...I did not see another Marans there! Perhaps they were in a different row that I missed? But wouldn't it be cool if my little girl got Best of Breed? hee hee! Now I'm dreaming! I'm going to hope for no DQs and head back tomorrow to pick her up.
