Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

That is way I hatch in the early spring so the pullets can pick up the slack of the molters. I only get about 18 eggs a day. About 3/4 are on strike here too.

All the girls in my coop are from late winter early spring, they went through a molt in September. It just seems like when we got that storm at the beginning of the week everyone stopped. I'm still wondering if it was caused from the low pressure system that we had. That dang storm lasted from Sunday - Wednesday. Wind, wind and more wind and lots of rain.

Just wanted to pop in and let everyone know that Kim won the Marans Egg Show here at the 128th Annual Nebraska State Poultry Show! I'll get your entry card and award to you asap! Yay!

Congratulations to Kim!!!

Just stopping in again. The show went so well and everyone loved the egg show. There were so many people asking about the Marans and am hopeful the competition field will keep growing here.

Kim told me to tell everyone to say thank you for all the congrats. She's unable to log into BYC at the moment and is working on it.

Out of 21 hens pullets, I selected 7 to cull right off. These had more than 2 issues to fight that were obvious. I figure If I do this a couple of times I will have my best new pullets. I am see BIG improvements this year. If I make the same progress next year I will be over the moon excited about the Marans again. I was really about to give up on breeding them and just focus on egg color.

One pullet was cut because she was purple and not green

I am learning.

None of my birds are laying. I'm lucky to get one to eat. They all molted back in September.

I have two marans hens who are quite dependable as egg layers. They lay 5 eggs a week. The eggs are not as big as those from my barred rock or RIR, but are still respectable.
