Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Were these APA shows? I know that the APA is super strict on this sort of thing, and it happens more at 4-H and state fair type shows. I've been to a good number of large APA shows, and have VERY seldom seen an ill bird (at least from outward appearance).

I do take Oxine solution with me, and spray the cage & shavings thoroughly before putting my bird in; I also spray the bird directly, as well as the cage, several times throughout the show. I have sometimes gotten odd looks from folks when I do this, but it's a precaution that is mandatory to me, so I just smile & go on with my work!

One was APA and others were smaller but I couldn't believe how sick they all were. All the bantams were shaking their heads with snot. Some of the turkeys had pox and almost all had at least 1 eye swollen. It makes me nervous about showing...if I ever get there. lol I'll keep some Oxine solution on hand though. Does Nolvassan solution work as well?

Don's got some things going on now in his personal life that he's tending to. I'm sure he'll be back on when he's in a better place.

I think, healthwise, though, that things are going well for him, at least from what he's mentioned. Of course, I personally with him the very best, and I know the rest of us do, as well! Don:

Thank you for letting us know, Wynette!

Don, sending

If I was seeing that kind of "crap" at the shows, you couldn't pay me enough money to take my birds.

Even with a glass box, vaccination, Oxine or any other magical spray! (Sometimes I will see a one-off bird at a fair or something or even maybe at one of the bigger shows - which they usually make disappear as soon as it is reported - but certainly not what you describe!!)

This is why I haven't shown yet and am very nervous to do any showing at all. I am going to attend one in December and if it looks ok I'll consider taking some next year but I'm trying to be very cautious.

Very good idea to scope out the show in years prior. Come to Columbus on the weekend! I'm betting you'll like what you see there!

(But I would still use the Oxine just as Wynette said.

Guys all look at me like I'm nuts with my spray bottle and I get the questions but I don't care. I too am nervous to take my birds out. I don't show them often and try to be careful about where I take them. VERY careful. And then quarantine when they come home - just in case.)

Hi all, pardon the intrusion, but I wanted expert opinions on the question I have.

I am thinking of adding to my flock, and I love the deep color of Marans eggs. That being said, the coop on my property is very closely located to my neighbors, and I try very hard to be cognizant of that proximity, and purchase relatively quiet breeds (I know, for a chicken :p).

So my question is: How loud/quiet are Marans as a breed? I'm loving everything else I read about them, but there is little information to be found about their chattiness. I want to be responsible, and not impulse-buy only to have to re-home later if it turns out they're like Rhode Island Reds.

LOL yeah Columbus is only like....12 hours from me....I'll pop right over. :) I'm sure I would be drooling and chicken poor by the time I left.

I was told these were marans. If they are what kind are they and what will the egg color be.

They look like "splash" birds which mean they are carrying two copies of the Bl (blue) gene. They could very well be Marans. Hard to say beyond that. We'll have to wait to hear from you on egg colour.

Egg colour might help to know if they are really Marans.
