Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Quote: The only color Marans admitted by the APA are Black Copper Marans and Wheatens. Cuckoos are looking for to be admitted in 2013. Splash is not an accepted color in most breeds. I think because it is hard to get a STANDARD color to breed to in Splash. Just an odd note.... Black Plymouth Rocks are not an accepted color but BLUE is.... odd.... just ODD.

Solid Blue, Black and Splash Marans are HARD to find. Usually they have copper in the mix and are sold as Solid colors if the Copper does not express, but they are still coppers. I don't think splash is that uncommon is it? Pinkchick hatches splash, Vicki does and now I do too. Vicki has Solid colors and coppers... I think.... Mine and Kim's are coppers. Anyone that breeds blues will get splash and blacks.... they are just part of the genetics of breeding blue.
I just have two solid black girls left. I have been on the look out for a solid male since I lost my blue to a predator last year. I do however have 3 blue and 4 black eggs that I've been given permission to try and hatch from the egg show, so I'll see what I can get to hatch! I said I wasn't going to do a fall hatch, but I can't say no to the chance to try. Who'd have thought I'd be praying for cockerels, but I'm praying for at least 2 to work with.

I'm also gonna set the winning eggies of Kim's from her lovely Splash Copper gal, since she said I could, so we'll see what I end up with! Its like Christmas and my Birthday all wrapped in one....wait, my birthday is Christmas Eve, so I guess it does kind of work out that way every year...heehee

Quote: You are funny! I am still HOPING For some solid chicks from the young cuckoo roo, but so far 100% blue cuckoos.....

I moved him and the cuckoo hen out to a breeding pen. She is the only one laying in the pen so I can still collect eggs to hatch and will. He has 1 or 2 other cuckoo pullets and 3 or 4 Blue Cuckoos.... I will get lots of splash from that pen LOL Splash over Blue and Reg Cuckoos. My 2 younger Cuckoos roos are looking good GREAT leg feathering BUT they have had their tails pulled out. I am not going to put them in the pen untill I can see the WHOLE picture. I know the type is good on the young splash.

Can't wait to see what you hatch!

Are you going to be getting the birchen eggs any time soon?

Do you mean the replacement eggs from Rodney? He wanted me to contact him in a bit as most of his girls are molting and slacked off laying. So, if the weather holds well enough to chance shipping on them, I will probably have those too. I must be insane!

The other possibility I have to hatch from April H. in amongst her batch of eggs she said I could hatch is 3 white marans eggs. I'm very excited to see if I get anything to hatch out of those or any of those nice enough to let me try!

Quote: I saw the White ones Raven1 got, they just look easier LOL.

You can handle it... you are a PRO!

Did you see, I made some quick culling in my Marans pullets.... 7 are hitting the road ASAP

I am seeing HUGE leaps this year. Thanks to your help and Kim's roos.

So my question is: How loud/quiet are Marans as a breed? I'm loving everything else I read about them, but there is little information to be found about their chattiness. I want to be responsible, and not impulse-buy only to have to re-home later if it turns out they're like Rhode Island Reds.
Marans Roosters crow LOUDLY!

The hens do the typical egg laying song, but other than that you don't hear from the hens.

I must have missed that lady. I've been so busy for the last week that I'm out of the loop me thinks!
I am really happy for you that you can see the progress. Its the best shot in the arm for sure!
The numbers here are still needing to decline, but will be working on that over the next couple of weeks, so hoping the breeding pens will be finalized as well. I also have to switch over to the winter waterers and winterize the coops as well. Just praying I can get it all done!
