Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I don't find my Marans roo crow LOUDER than my others.... maybe a little more often, but I have mostly Marans

I have a banty Silver Penciled Wyandotte and he crows louder than the others by FAR... usually right in my ear too

I have a Good Shepard Barred Rock roo... almost never hear him crow.

I have raised up a few marans roos to about 20 weeks and they have all started crowing around 7-8 weeks and have not stopped. Seems constant all day long. I have found that they seem to have more testosterone then my mixed mutt roos......... I have yet to have just one marans roo on the property- and I would think it would make a difference- as for a period of time last year we had only one roo and he was quiet most all the time (my mixed mutt boy). Either way- roos make noise.... and each has it's own voice, some louder, higher pitched then others.

I'm so excited. I finally have a day to do some sorting of birds! Its time to cull through the youngest birds I have left and to reassess the breeding pens so I can switch out some of the better offspring from this year. Looking forward to seeing what I have left to work with. Hoping I should also be able to do some work on building on pens as well today.
I'll also see if I can work on getting some photos loaded from the show if I have time.

I'll see what I can do. Its a cold windy day, so am not sure, but might try to get some pics of my birds here at home. Who knows what will end up happening tho. haha
yeah we are just starting to get a few flakes of snow here so we will probably get what you have there too!

think I'm back at square one with my blue cuckoo pen- will have to see how the next few months turn out. Have some younger ones in with the older hens and the hens aren't letting the younger birds come out into the run area

What happened with the blue cuckoos? I wanted to keep working on them, but just had to make some hard decisions about what I really wanted to work on since I only have so much room and time.

Hope you get to where you feel you're on track with the blue cuckoos - I've been wondering how you're doing with them. I know you had a lovely start!

Please don't give up!!

Cock birds crowing - I have several breeds, and I do not find my Marans to crow any louder or more often than others, personally. Must be a "personality" thing. I also don't notice them starting super early, either. In fact, I've got a pen of 8-week olds right now and haven't noticed one crow, and I'm sure there are at least 10 cockerels in there. Course they could be intimidated by all the "big boys" crowing, I suppose!

Hey Wynette,

A bit off subject for a second, but you have silver penciled rocks don't you? How do your birds run as far as size and body type compared to the other rock varieties. It seems like I have this thing where I like color varieties that seem to run smaller in all the breeds I raise. The birchens in Marans also tend to run smaller, and yet they have to be my favorite. haha
