Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

YEAH it is a dog's nose. I thought she was kidding about the shrunken head.

Ok. finally got a few photos to load after how many days? Grrr You'll have to excuse the lighting, as I took them right when I opened the building. The lights are on timers, so were still coming on all the way on the half where the large fowl and waterfowl were.
First is Geronimo, Gigantor's son. He won best of breed and received lots of compliments, including from the judges. I was surprised how well he behaved as he likes his freedom

Luella, she wasn't as well behaved. She would not stand nice as all she wanted was to go back home and run free.

My lone black pullet. She is incredibly beefy for her age. I'm hoping some of those solid black eggs I have permission to hatch will give me cockerel, so I have something to work with.

Here's my Reserve Champion English girl. I was very well pleased!

On the hatching eggs, I set them yesterday morning finally. One, I wanted them to have a chance to recouperate from all the shipping and then getting moved around. I also was a bit worried about setting the eggs right before the storms we were supposed to get over the weekend. I'm hoping the rest time will help them to hatch well. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!!!

Yup! Dog's nose. BA HA HA! Math, you crack me up. It's my Bouvier (passed away last year, sigh....) Arnie's nose. He was always coming up putting his face right in your face, so this picture is somewhat of a tribute to him in an odd way.

Had a fantastic time at the Ohio Nationals - some lovely birds there, beautiful eggs at the egg show, as well. Don was supposed to be there, but we never did find him! Don?? We checked back at the Marans area hundreds of times, hoping to find him. It was dumb to not set a time to meet - we were so looking forward to it. Sorry we missed you, Don!

Congrats on your placings - LOVELY birds!!!

Here are my three BCM roosters that are 5 months old. We like Meaty the best and the other two are hard to tell apart but they are Efron and Tyson. Both Efron and Tyson are destined for freezer camp as we want to keep Meaty for breeding with the two hens to make more Meaties and hens. Meaty grew faster than the other two and is massive, he is head rooster. Plus we think he is prettier. Please give me criticism on them. Good, bad and ugly. Specifically we want to know are we keeping the right rooster for breeding. We are not showing, just breeding for eating, but do not want to get that far off of breed standard. Thanks for feedback.

CGM - boy, lots of pics! From what I can see (there are not many with good conformation postures, so I hesitate to say much), Meaty is a good choice. There are some things I don't personally care for about him, his underline appears more blocky (more like a RIR) than rounded as it should be, although he's probably going to fill out more. But he definitely does appear to have some really nice size, which I believe need improvement in this variety. Looks like he is lacking shank feathering - I see he has them, but they appear to be a bit light (thin) to me. In the first picture, it looks like his eyes may be a bit dark, but that could be the picture. I hesitate about giving up one of the "freezer" males - they are both overmelanized (too dark); however, it's useful to have a different color type within the breed. You might choose to keep two. THe cockerel in last pic has what appears to be very nice shank feathering. The females look nice, though I would personally not use the pullet in the 3rd & 4th pics to the end. Her tail is too long, IMO, and her back is a bit "u" shaped rather than flat as it should be. It also appears that she has a large wave in the front of her comb. (all my personal opinion, I am not an expert.)
