Ruth:
You are so right....the Bethel Farm Marans.....I'm anxiously waiting for my little "Bethels" that are going along in the incubator.
I know why we refer to the "Davis, Jeane. etc" line of birds but in truth when one goes out and picks a rooster and a hen to mate that then becomes their "line". They chose the matings......they just became breeders !! We all need to be doing the same thing...our flocks are our line......Saying that birds "originated" from certain genetics I think is acceptable....but when you make the selections or cull birds the breeding process just became yours......not anyone else's.
I have a very nice set of Wheatens that I love....they are extremely nice standard wise and lay very dark eggs. The gentleman I got them from has worked on them for a few years and I consider them his line.......I refer to them as his line of Wheatens even though he told me exactly where the birds originated and the crosses that he made to get them to this point. The work was his...therefore the credit is his. I think the same should apply to anyone working diligently on a breeding program....the work is theirs, therefore the credit is theirs.....win, lose, or draw.
IF I arrive at a point that I feel that my breeding program justifies it.....will be referred to as the Rocky Springs line....Otherwise, I am going to be real quiet !
Incidentally, I've personally seen Ruth's birds and there are some awesome girls there....
