Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Good morning, peeps! Sheesh, I wasn't getting e-mail notifications of posts in this thread and got to thinking...that's odd....so popped in, and yup - I've missed a bunch. BYC doens't work the best with Internet Explorer, but I don't have any other choice.

One of my hens who finished molting began to lay again...she's 3, and lays a nice egg for her age, but it's matte finish, not nice & glossy as it should be.

Taken indoors, with flash. I've never hatched any of her eggs, because she's a bit mossy, but I may do so this spring to see if I can get offspring that lay glossy. This hen is in my layer pen.

Nice Eggs

I got my first egg yesterday.
Today I was putting up some clear plastic (snow/rain shield) on the run and two hens went in the coop, between all the drilling and plastic flying around I would peak inside. It looked like the hens were trying out all six nest boxes, they were scratching out the hay all over the place. I'm going to check back a little later and maybe, just maybe there will be another egg or two.

Yep, I saw that - super exciting to be sure!

I still derive great joy from collecting from all of my pens, not just the pretty colored ones! Eggs are fascinating me, and it's still a miracle to me that a hen can make one in a day.

Myself,,,,love the color, especially the consistancy of the color over the whole egg. Is "mossy" a difficult trait to correct when breeding ?

Previously someone that many of the regulars here do "dry hatch incubating".....

Wondered if someone would give a brief rundown on this ??? Does it mean you add no water for humidity levels?? And, how many practice this type of incubation ?

I've had some difficulty hatching Marans eggs, chicks develop but have a difficult time making it out of the egg,,, and wondered if they hatch better with this method. Do some breeds hatch more successfully with this method ??? and why ?
